January 2009 Mileage Thread

This is a month by month competition. Every time you make an entry it will be added up and recorded together according to the fuel type and car/year you are driving.
THIS IS NOT an individual tank competition (or a partial tank competition for that matter).

Entries will be accepted until February 5th 2009, but remember, report tanks FILLED IN January.

Entry Format:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Driver:
Miles:
Gallons:
Model Year:
Model:
Tranny:
Fuel Type:

You are allowed to put more than one fill up in a post, so long as each fill up conforms to format.

MPG: (optional since I will calculate it automatically anyway)
(anything else you would like to add)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hint on entering your data - after the colon ( ":") put a space.

US GALLONS AND MILES

TRANNY TYPES:
(x) A = x speed automatic
(x) M = x speed manual *
DSG = direct-shift gearbox
CVT = continuously variable transmission
* if you have swapped in a taller 5th gear please noted this (ie: 5M w/.681)

FUEL TYPES:
Bx = biodiesel - x is the percentage of bio
Biodiesel use equal to, or more than B20, will be indicated in GREEN.
ULSD / LSD / D2 = normal petroleum based diesel
Also please note if it's winterized

- please note if you are using a fuel additive (ie: ULSD +PS)
- - Power Service (PS); Stanadyne (ST); Redline (RL)

Posts not in format will not be tallied / corrected. If I have to do any editing to get your post in format (or to get the correct name), it will not be counted. Feel free to correct your own posts to get them in format.

Please do not go back and add additional fillups to a post. Multiple fillups per post is fine as long as all fillups are in format. If the driver name is not the same as your post name - this will be considered "Not in format" and will not be counted. Only exceptions would be "and spouse" etc.

Results as of 2-05-09

:( Mostly non-highway, winter fuel, short trips.

/EDIT. FWIW folks I have an excel spreadsheet I use to estimate MPG. My estimate showed 42.4 MPG for this tank. PM me if you want a copy.

Too many short trips and bad traffic and lack of restraint on my part. :eek: Better luck on the next tank.

The previous tank wasn´t fully vented so there is a small handicap here, anyways just to put a number after 15k miles wo caring about fuel economy.

Fully vented fillups. Short run and return, mostly highway traveling at 86mph+ most of the trip. This MPG is very good considering the GDR703 rule:

40mph = 80mpUSgallon
50mph = 70mpUSgallon
60mph = 60mpUSgallon
70mph = 50mpUSgallon
80mph = 40mpUSgallon

Edit: First leg was early in the morning, air intake temperature went up to 80°F, the return trip was in the afternoon and air intake temperatures were from 90 and up to 160°F. Thinking about a bigger intercooler, might be worth it???

Mostly highway, temps mid 20's. Finally getting close to where my old 2005 New Jetta TDI was at for mpg. First over 600 mile tank. Car new in Nov now has 8000 miles on it.

Mostly Highway, cold temps higher 20's. Finally starting to see miles to go in the 600 mile range on the MFD after fillups. Getting close to where old 2005.5 sedan was for mpg.

She had hers filled at a full service station with ULSD to dilute the B30 that was still in there. Unknown what filling technique was used but the calculated MPG indicates that it isn't truly full. That does leave space for me to add some B100, but I'll wait until these sub-zero F days are past before I raise the present estimated B10 mix now in the tank back up to B20 or so.

<edit> If I do add some B100 it will all be accounted for in the next report.<end>

I've only had my VW TDI for about 5 weeks and only have about 3500 miles on the odometer. More satisfying to me than to fuel efficiency is the fact that I only have to stop for fuel 1/2 as often. This is worth something to me!

well--maybe its because i am driving a NB and not a Jetta--the wing on the back makes a huge difference--usually this time of year i am at 38-39 mpg--but since i added the wing now consitently 47-49 in the winter and 50+ in the summer.

"Wing on the back..."

Is this a deck spoiler?

Craaaaap, I missed that in the mileage report... was looking below at the "2006 Jetta 5m "Diesel" edition 20K"... maybe I need a wing??? :) I doubt that would help a Jetta much... but I will research in the threads to see if anyone has increased mileage on a Jetta with a trunk spoiler...

To drive to work I drive @80 MPH for 32 miles. Climb a 10% grade hill for 9 miles as fast as traffic, usually 75 MPH. Surface streets are 6 miles. Wife drove the car so my MPG went down:rolleyes: She likes the car as it does have a 'chip':D Best MPG was 52.8 MPG :p
