overheating while idling for a long time

If you go the route of replacing the thermostat, it shares a cavity in the block with the waterpump impeller. You can reach through with your finger and try to spin it on the shaft; any movemet or wobbling = pump is bad. If that is the case look to do your timing belt sooner than later.
