After DMF alignment
My alignment (well steering wheel) was off after doing the DMF, the steering wheel was about 5 degrees to the left or at 11:00 center. However the car didnt have any symptoms of misalignments, I noticed the steering wheel finally corrected itself the other day, after about 2 months..So I haven't had mine checked..

After doing the job, I dont think I can get it that close, My wheel is off center, and I will get it in to get an alignment. If the wheels off as far as mine is, not quite 11 oclock, but about 1 inch off, Then the toe HAS to be out..

Just replaced my DMF without the ratcheting adapters. I just used a plain old 18 mm shallow socket instead of the triple square (12 point) bit. I had plenty of room for my ratchet.

How long did it take? Any problems? Things to look out for? Where did you get your DMF? How much? Inquiring minds want to know.

Dougsbug,
I ordered mine from Boraparts.com, was 678.00 plus I chose overnight FEDEX shipping, but that price includes regular ground shipping. Also purchased new bolts from him also, I think they were around 35.00.
Job took me about 10 hrs. Getting it mounted back up was the hardest part for me.. I bent the spacer plate on mine while jacking it back in place, When I finished and started the car, it made a screeching sound(the spacer was dragging up against the flywheel), so I had to crawl back under there and took some visegrips and pulled the spacer out a little.. Other than that, Not too bad.. PS. I also replaced the DSG Filter, about 35.00 too..
total
Flywheel $678.00
Fed Ex $ 35.00
Bolts $ 35.00
DSG Filter $ 35.00
Hoist Rent $ 55.00
Tri Sq. bits $ 35.00

Hey guys,
I am concerned with my DMF. I have 37k on my 2006 Jetta TDI w/DSG. It has no issues with 1/2 gear unless its BONE cold. but occasionally i am having issues upshifting from 2nd to 3rd it will clunk into 3rd. I cant tell if there is a metal rattle or now really because i have noticed a change. i think the cold diesel engine idle sounds like a bunch of metal clanking anyways. I am going to have my 40k done soon and was going to go to the stealer because they are close and the nearest Guru is 300 miles away or so. I am not thinking my best bet is to go to the guru for my 40k and have him look at the DMF because it may be my last chance before my warranty is over so if he finds anything how can i prove to the dealer it needs done so the warranty will cover it. Just looking for advise on how to get it done before warranty is over if it truly needs to be done....
Thank you all.
-Justin

Rsbdiesel,
My dealer, Gossett in Memphis, TN has that DSG filter for $29.40. When you mentioned that price I thought that maybe I was mistaken, so I looked up my invoice to doublecheck.. part # 02E305051C $29.40

Hey Randy,
Looks like list price went down on that part. Maybe since its becoming a more commonly used part? MSRP is $24.50 on Parts.com

Is this a typo? 37k on a 06', it must be your 5th car!?!?

Robby from runonbeer replaced mine. I haven't had the alignment checked but it feels fine and doesn't appear to be wearing the tires uneven. This job scared me but after watching Robby do it, I'm not as scared of jobs like this as I used to be. On the way to Robby's, I stopped at the dealer to get some bolts. I started talking with one of the mechanics and he admitted to changing a lot of 06' DMFs. He said that most were noise complaints and that only a small percentage had DMFs come apart (ie. holes in tranny case or damage to DSG). I didn't exactly follow what he was talking about because I'm not a mechanic but he said that he doesn't drop the driver's side control arm. He said that he spins the tranny which provides clearance and slides it out. He said that this damages a seal which he just replaces. You mechanics might know what he was talking about. Thanks for the work Robby.

Nope. It was a 06/06 Build car so purchased in September of 2006. I am 19 and in college, not loads of times to do trips but i am working on it. I am planning to do a 2k trip end of next month and plan to stop by Marty in Fowlerville if i can get an appt for my 40k service the day before the trip since its on the route and hopefully he can check the DMF while he is at it or at least listen to it. It doesnt clunk really loud from second to first but it does make enough of a clunk where you can feel it in your feet. I think i am maybe just being a bit picky....No marble sounds in idle that i can tell at least. I just hope i can get VW to replace it sometime within powertrain and get a NEW version in there that doesnt want to self destruct. I am just worried this one will last till a month after the PT warranty is out September of 2011 or 60k....

Yeah I can get that filter for around $25.
Re: triple square. I just used an 18mm hex head socket and the harbor freight 1/2" square drive adapters for my flexy head 19mm ratcheting wrench.
Re: alignment. I've only done two of these but the alignment was not affected in either case. I remove the entire subframe/DS control arm assembly from the car. Leaving the control arm firmly attached to the main sub frame and I make marks on the ball joint bolts and a few key places on the sub frame.
Re: time. first one took 9 hours with an inoperative right shoulder and a very sharp assistant. Second time was 6 hours with a slightly more effective shoulder, all by myself and a girl that wouldn't quit texting me
