Diesel Passats Coming?
http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/auto...MDA5LXNlZGFucw--
Volkswagen's’ next generation of fuel-efficient cars will kick off halfway through next year with two diesel versions of the Passat, the company’s largest sedan sold in the United States. The Passat BlueTDI will have a 140-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that gets an estimated 45 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. The Passat BlueMotion will have a less-powerful 108-hp 2.0-liter diesel engine with a stop/start function to shut it down during temporary stops. It will get an estimated 48 mpg overall.

48 mpg? Yea right & the Jetta was going to get 60mpg. We probably won't even see a diesel passat.

Until diesel gets down to rational levels, its a so what.
While I would not give up the Passat now, if I was making a decision on a car purchase, I would not buy a diesel. I would postpone until Ford hit the market with the Ecotech engines.
Its obvious that gasoline will always be a cheap as any liquid fuel, but diesel will go higher when demand goes up. I can live with that as the Passat is paid for, but not going into it at this point with a new vehicle.

The 3.0 would make sense and provide market differentiation.

I agree. On a fuel only cost per mile, i'm only about 1.5 to 2 cents per mile difference in my Suburban with my Jetta avging 35mpg

This is part of the government's "because we can" theory, not supply and demand more the less. That way, they can control the market the way they want, because all forms of large transportation except planes, which use kerosene, (somehwat similar to diesel), all use diesel. So they can fake a recession if they want. But how this relates to what I have to say, as long as I don't pay more for cost per mile, I'm happy, for my car, I believe diesel has to be $1.30 above gas to be more cost per mile. I for one would like to see more diesels, especially VW, MB, BMW, Volvo Etc. German diesels do it better versus Japanese. Although, I have respect for the 6.6 Duramax, Cummins. Cat is a Awesome performer as well. But those aren't in cars....yet well actually, I did read about a kid that put a Cat in a Ford ranger in Diesel Power mag.
The Toe-rag is coming with the V6 TDI w/urea like around Feb. 2009 last news I've seen.

Does anyone else think the back-end of the CC looks like a late 90's Ford Taurus?

That's a very short-sighted view. We are only just now are we seeing diesel's fuel cost advantage go to zero -- for the first time in many decades.
Assuming the same VW with a diesel vs. gas engine:
45mpg / 28mpg = 1.6
$3/gal diesel / $2/gal gas = 1.5
In other words, right now it costs just about as much in fuel to run a 28mpg gasser as it does to run a 45mpg diesel.
Notice that back when fuel was
$5/gal diesel / $4/gal gas = 1.25
Even though there was a $1 spread, it was still more cost-effective to drive a diesel, because that $1 represented a smaller amount percentage-wise.
The only reason to NOT buy a new diesel is if you assume that this spread -- based on a percentage, not dollars per gallon -- will be higher in the future than it is now. But that claim would be difficult to support, given that this is the first time we've seen this price difference.
Diesel is always higher this time of year as it competes with winter fuel oil production at the refineries. Diesel will start coming down in a couple months. And next spring gas will shoot back up again. And if you bought yourself a gasser car, you'll be kicking yourself for thinking so shortsightedly.
