mpg: 57.145:D fuel 10/2/07 was $3.119  so I continue to drive in a very relaxed fashion. The harder I try, the higher the fuel price next tank. 2 consecutive 800 plus tanks.

Finally didn't have to run the A/C and got on some backroads. I wish there was a way to cut down on the drag the A/C has on my engine.

A/C in use, .8 hwy commute at 70mph / .2 driving in town. I'm not hypermiling a bit. I drove home with nine 5-gallon containers of water for an aquarium. Really felt the load, the car pulled hard.

Last month, STL Hemi said that Dodge didn't make a 6 speed for the HD until 2006. I have a 2000 model Dodge 2500HD with a 6 speed, and I drove a 1999 2500HD with a 6 speed. Maybe he meant the 6 speed wasn't available with the HD *if* you got a gasser.

My truck is making ~320 h.p. and 675 lb.ft. at the rear wheels, and can turn 21 mpg cruising the interstate. :D Not too impressive for this crowd I realize, but it is a 7,130# truck (full of fuel but otherwise empty), 4X4, and a 5.9L 6 cylinder. :D It's burning diesel too, so maybe I should start posting my fuel mileage with it? I tow with it most of the time, and average 13.25 mpg towing.

After reading the many FE threads here are my choices

What I don’t do:
drafting
keyoff (only when already stopped at long red lights).

What I do:
pulse and glide in N
very very little AC
brake as little as possible
Check twice a week the tires at 48 psi (max 51)
use Scangauge as a FE guideline at HIGH refresh rate and watch for: fuel economy (MPG), pedal position (TPS), intake air temperature (FIA) and engine loading (LOD)
Avoid traffic, otherwise:
keep pace with traffic if going at 50-55mph, if traffic is faster then go to the right lane, if traffic is slower overtake or change lanes as required NQA
Vented tanks

What MIGHT be a difference:
Driving above 5200 ft and 6000 ft ALL the time.
53 cetane fuel (but needs confirmation because current standard states 48 minimum)
No snow screen
205/55/R16 Michelins and wheel alloys (stock)

Cheers

Best fuel mileage so far, probably due to the 150 mile, all highway trip I took at the end of the tank. AC all the time. The rest of the tank was 50% highway, 50% city.

I thought I would see how my car did on the highway at 60mph, AC on 1, three people in the car and a full tank of fuel. Not too bad....

Driving totally normal 20 city and 80 highway lots of high speeds and crazy fast take offs. This shell ultra is amazing stuff. Next one i hope to clear 61 hopefully.

My mileage still sucks, thanks to my commute time, but I have some good news: I turned over 100K during this tank. My mileage at fill-up was 100,579.

I look forward to another couple hundred thousand more miles just like it. :D

poor mileage, I think...

Driver: cctoronto
Kilometers: 835.5
Litres: 59.77
Model year: 2003
Model: Golf
Tranny: 4A
Fuel type: Shell Ultra Diesel
MPG: 32.87

Something's wrong: on this particular tank, I got 32.87 MPG (US), or 39.48 MPG (IMP)... and that is somewhat on the higher side of my range: something tells me I'm not doing as well as I could/should be in this department.
Driving style: whilst I'm not whaling on it in the city, I am somewhat aggressive, I also put about half that tank in at highway speeds, varying between 85 km/h and 110 km/h depending on what type of highway it was. A/C on.

Not aggressive driving on the highway portion at all.

Seems kind of low to me... thoughts?

Thanks for the info. I knew the difference between your September 54mpg average, and the 69 mpg this month must have come from some revelation you had. Keep up the good work! My sill plate is at 1050 feet, and most of my driving is closer to sea level than that. I guess I'm doomed to boring drives yielding in the 50's;) DK

I definately think that the high elevation helps n_o_o_c, but you've got one of the most efficient TDI platforms out there MPG wise. Some minor modifications to your driving style and the right equipment and 60's are well within your reach. Don't give up, it's in your reach!

This is my first 700+ mile tank with my TDI. Pretty good for a DSG too! I am now a member of the 700 mile club!

tires...

noone of consequence - What brand & model of tires are you running that have a 51 psi max limit? I'm interested. About 40 mpg "around town" is all that I can muster with my gas guzzler. My caveat is that the pulse and glide technique get's on my friggin' nerves, so I won't do it, and that I generally will not drive below the speed limits (especially if there are people already waiting on me ... I find it disrespectful to them).

However, I am always thinking of things I could do to cut fuel useage. I'm running good tires, and keep them at 38 - 40 psi, but you're tires are likely more fuel efficient than mine.

Hehehe, one of the ways I thought of to cut fuel useage was to buy an '03 Jetta TDI 5 speed. But my car cost me $14,400 and is paid off. A good used '03 TDI 5 speed with less than 80,000 miles or so costs about that same amount (~$14k). If I sold my car I'd be at least $6,000 in the hole for a TDI, plus then there's taxes. I'd never make up the difference. So I'll keep my gas guzzler because it will still cost me less overall than if I had bought a TDI to start with (it was just so much cheaper to purchase). I would love to have a TDI, but the cost of ownership of my Corolla is even lower than a TDI.

But, if the Corolla gets crashed ... I'll take the insurance money and find a TDI. :)

All highway mileage with the cruse set at 70mph and I used the AC on 70% of this tank as well.
