Any interest he asked… Bwahahaha!!
Count Linda and I in, with bells on (and maybe covvies!) I suppose food concerns will be in later posts but Linda already wants to know what she can bring. Patience Grasshopper…
I don't have any work I'd like to do, at least not yet.
Hey Tim, bring the new wifey! We don't bite. My wife looks forward to this GTG and Sandy, Martys' SO is very gracious and sociable so she won't feel out of place. Maybe we can get some pics for next years "Ladies of TDIclub" calendar
J, bring some pics of the Eco ride too. I've wanted to do that engine tansplant into my Caddy for years. I want to hear all about it when I next see you.

Covvies? I thought you were thinking of going vertical for this GTG in order to enjoy the socializing and food/drink for a change!
And yes, I'll be there - if there is one MI GTG that is not to be missed this is it!

Hi Jeff,
Count me in on getting chipped! It' my first GTG. Also, Kirk in Rockford speaks very highly of the after chip performance.
I have a 2002 Jetta TDI, automatic. Bought it in 2005 at 50k miles and currently have 140k and going strong. No problems other than the brake switch that was recalled. I had the timing belt changed at 80K.
Thanks,
James

I will return this year. And hopefully not get stuck in the mud.
I will need help with an intake cleaning. Will also be doing fuel filter.
Last year I got there late due to holiday traffic. How early do the local hotels fill up for the holiday weekend. Also, any close by camp grounds?
And thanks again for having this GTG.

Mark:
Ask her to bring that lacey black thong...I'm tired of seeing Old Navy on every month of my 2004 "Laddies if TDIclub" calendar. A little cheek would be a welcome change!

I have some semi hard stuff I want to do to my car, and wondered if this could be added to the work list:
-Remove, clean, reinstall turbo on my TDI
-Remove leaking pump on my ECO and install a different, non leaking one.
Would it be possible to do both of those? Does someone have the dial indicator to set the timing on the IDI engines?
-Jason

Ooo. Possible head gasket. Maybe rebuilding the head with fresh parts.
Timing Belt (Is everything one time use only? I only have 16k on my current one)
Water pump if the TB is done.
Probably a coolant heater while I have everything drained.
I'll can also assist with A3 EGR deletes. Hrm. Maybe I should put a parts list together.

You should've posted the above here:

As that is the RC chipping thread for this particular GTG! I mention this as I expect Jeff of RC will be monitoring that thread and not this one.

Get the TB kit from DieselGeek or other source to cover the parts required. Then pick up the Metalnerd special TB tools as you will need them to do this job in addition to regular tools.
While there should be some TB gurus in attendance they will only guide you through the process by prior (pre-GTG) arrangement. The reason for that is in the past they have gotten stretched thin trying to supervise two or more TB jobs going on at the same time. If something goes wrong with your TB change it can get expensive (can you say new engine?) and they prefer to focus on one car per GTG now which is understandable.
I suggest you read up on the TB how-to posted elsewhere on these forums so you know what is involved. And no, I'm not a TB guru but know some of them and have assisted with a few TB's so know something about the procedure. Just passing along this advice for your knowledge plus any others thinking of doing a TB at this GTG.....
Last but not least - it would be good decorum if you check with the host (JetAAH) about doing the TB first as he likes to keep track of the indoor floor space since the barn is full pretty much the entire day with TDI's undergoing various work.

I'd check with the host (JetAAH) first to see if it's okay with him to do all this work you are thinking about. A TB alone can and usually takes about the entire day at a GTG. If you're going to do the TB you'll need new stretch bolts as they are one-time use only! Why didn't you change the water pump when the TB was done and do the head work at that time if it was needed? Seems like a lot of extra time/work here if the TB was just done 16K ago.....

Darkscout- you've an A3, right? No stretch bolts to mess with in that case. You can re-use the timing belt, if it doesn't show any signs of degradation. Just mark the rotational direction and put it back on the same way.

JetAAH,
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=169828
Basically my coolant is over pressuring, has bubbles in it and there's oil in the coolant. I'm not even sure if I'm going to wait that long, but I'd rather (if it's ok) get my name on a list early and then have to back out next month than the monday before pull a Dr. Farnsworth: "Good news everybody."
May is a long way away still.

Well. Car was bought on ebay. Harv was on vacation so I contacted someone else, I said I wanted the pump done but... hours later I came to pick it up and it wasn't on my bill.... Anyway. It's an A3 so it's not as critical. I just figure pushing 190k I should get it done (if everything else is coming apart).
If only I could have gotten the pesky head gasket to coincide with a TB change

I've done TB-belts before on my A2s. I've never done one on something as critical as a TDI, but I got my 1.8 swap time down to 60 minutes (under a lamp at a gas station). Fired right up! I know the TDI is a bit more involved, but I'm pretty meticulous about stuff when I do it.

A3, Yay for simplicity. All the rollers were replaced too, I know they suggest changing those each TB, but should the TB show a bit of wear, could they be asked to pull 76k of service? (16 they have now + another 60k TB).
However, does this mean that at 1k or so after the change I'm going to need to retorque everything? The bolts are 1.11 a piece. Would it be worth the $15 insurance to get those anyway?
