Dan, wouldn't he still perform the basic settings for the DSG to recalibrate or is that just an option?

The re-calibration of the DSG using basic settings is recommended with the service, but not mandatory - at least in my opinion.

I highly recommend it if you are having any issues at all with the transmission or shifting - anything you do not like.

Just completed a full 40K service.

DSG Service - used homemade fill tool and VCDS - thanks to this forum.

Had to pull the intake and battery/battery tray to access the filter - this part was not fun, due to inexperience - will be much easier next time around.

After DSG service, the power steering and SS (traction) dash lights were on. They both disappeared after short drive.

Did not recalibrate the DSG, appears to drive the same as before.

Found a disconnected intake tube and coolant hose clamp - rubbing against the hose - but not yet damaged. All thanks to prior dealer service.

RE: No need for $200 tool?

Why can't one stick a tube narrower than the snorkle up into the DSG and gravity feed until run off begins, then seal with old washer and plug while doing Vag-Com before doing a final run-off when the fluid heats up and expands by removing the drain plug?

I've gravity fed tranmission fluid before, like this, and am not sure why all the fuss with plumbing contraptions.

MrSprdSheet, you obviously haven't done one of these tranny's with this fluid. There is no way you are going to gravity feed through a tube small enough that would do what you are suggesting. While it does sound like a good idea on paper, you'd be waiting all day, or longer, to get fluid into the tranny like that. Gravity feed with the diameter of tube most of us are using takes a little bit (no more than 20min to feed in all fluid) but it's not too bad at all.

I fill from the filter cavity and from the bottom..I dont pull the battery tray, you can get in between the engine and battery tray and replace the filter, then fill it as well..Its tight, but can be done..

Is this on a 2009 or 2010 DSG?

As some have said that things are now in the way, on the newer ones.

I have not looked at my 2010 yet for this issue.

Delaer wanted $450, so I went the DIY route for my '06 Jetta. I followed the procedure, and it was not difficult at all -- about the same level of difficulty as an oil change. A few notes:

1) I did this at 50k (vs. scheduled 40k) and the trans seems to shift nicely after the change. It seems to shift smoother, but I can't be sure. Didn't really have a problem before the change, but I figured it's a preventative maint item, and a DSG replacement wouldn't be cheap! When I removed the drain plug (with DSG at temp), quite a bit of fluid drainied with the snorkel still in place, possibly indicating the factory over-filled the fluid during production.

2) I did not remove the battery tray. There is sufficient clearance in the '06 to replace the filter and add new fluid with only the air intake removal. Put lots of rags or paper towels around the filter housing base before removing -- I had quite a bit of fluid to clean up on the DSG (around the filter housing) after removing it.

3) Finding a 14mm allen key for the plug was difficult! Checker, Home Depot, Wallmart, Napa, etc did not have one. My local shop let me borrow one, so I gave the guy $10 for lunch.

4) I did not buy the $150+ tool for filling fluid from the bottom drain. I bought a Hoppy FloTool "Measu-Funnel" (item 10704) from the Walmart auto section for about $5. The black plug fit snugly into the hole in the filter area, and I suspended the funnel from the hood with a bungee cord. It has a large diameter hose and it filled very fast -- I want to say about a minute or two per liter. No mess at all.

5) I used a Vag-Com for the temp reading and went for 40 deg C after shifting into all gears. I put 6 liters in, and about 1 liter drained (with the sorkel in) at temp, level car, engine running.

6) I did not reset the adaptation values for the DSG with Vag-Com, and the DSG shifts smoothly after the procedure. So, if you could confirm the temp is in the proper range, you could probably perform the entire procedure without a Vag-Com.

Thank you for posting this procedure -- I saved several hundred dollars and had a fun time with the procedure!

I did the exact method as "FJG", on an 09, but had to remove the intake and battery tray.

It is normal for a lot of fluid to drain out when the plug is pulled and the engine is off. If you want a measure of prior fill, then you must pull the plug with the car running, at 40C, in park, after cycling through all the settings. You will always get about an ounce out, from the snorkel tube filling the first time the engine is shut down.

FJC- quick question for you and filling it from the top. Just so I get this straight, you pulled the plug, and the snorkel from the pan. Then you reinstalled the snorkel, left the plug off and filled from the top.

or did you reinstall the snorkel, and reinstall the drain plug then refill from the top? Just getting mixed up on when you get to temp and have to drain excess..

You must fill with the plug in place, and the snorkel in place.

AFTER starting the engine, running through the gears, and reaching temps, THEN you pull the plug so the fluid will drain to the snorkel level, then reinstall the plug BEFORE shutting off the engine.

When the engine is off the fluid in the transmission falls to the pan, and it will overflow the snorkel; if the drain is out your transmission would drain too low.

Default air filter housing removal

Great thread, great HOWTO. Doing my 40K DSG service now.

Ran into an issue trying to remove the air filter housing/box on my 2009. Assuming you loosened the lower box retaining bolt, seems like you just need to sharply yank up on it and the two rubber holders/retainers (one near the middle of the box, one outside it to the driver's far left) will let loose.

Check out this thread for details:

Key words so seaches can find this info:

This thread makes me so happy. I am about to approach 40k and I will be tackling this by myself and with a friend. I am mostly an inexperienced car noob, but I (hopefully all the needed tools) except:

Can someone please post a direct link to the correct 24mm impact socket and 14mm hex socket I need to purchase?

I would prefer to just order it online or find it in a store ahead of time, however I am worried without the help of you guru's I will have the wrong tool and be hiking to the hardware store (or waiting a few days without a car while the tools come).

Thanks all!
