This is how the contest works:
This is a month by month competition. Everytime you make an entry it will be added up and recorded together according to the fuel type and car/year you are driving.
THIS IS NOT an individual tank competition (or a partial tank competition for that matter).

If you have any questions, PM me.

Am I going first?

Well, I'm a little embarrassed about going first since I haven't reported mileage for awhile. I decided to put my stuff in for February, here goes--

Driver: Ernie Rogers
Miles: 772.7
Gallons: 12.309 ---> 62.77 mpg
Model year: 2003
Model: Beetle + wing
Tranny: M5
Fuel type: B10

The tankful was used in one day, at an average speed of 60 mpg, driving from Pleasant Grove, Utah, to Fresno, CA. I had just changed oil a day before,to Elf 0W30. And I topped off the tank with some biodiesel just before leaving.

I noticed an immediate improvement in mileage with the change in oil. (The oil replaced was Castrol 0W30.)

Ernie: Did the new oil help the engine start easier and run smoother?
I am presuming you like the new oil :D , let me know. I am planning to "up-grade" the oil in my B4.

By the way... could you come to the GTG that I am having in APRIL in Pagosa Springs, Co?
Would love to chat with you about AERO improvements to the B4 Variant.

Ernie,

The difference you noticed with the oil, was that because you changed to elf or just the fact that it was time for an oil change?

Now back to the mileage comp. I will be topping off today or tommorrow with some ulsd. The last tank of ulsd seems to be going fast.

Wha? If he filled and calculated in Feb shouldn't the data go in the Feb stats?

My intrepretation is that Bob Fout is correct - the date goes by when the tank was filled (which doesn't have to be the same as the post date), not when the miles were put on the car.

I think Elf is good oil-- first impressions

Do you have any easy questions?

I had been using Motul specific 506.01 0W30 until my last oil change and was entirely happy with it: it has become very expensive.

At the last oil change, I didn't have any "good stuff" handy and put in Castrol 0W30 (which also carries the 506.01 spec). It was not obvious that my mileage had been affected. I didn't have many good mileage records during the time the oil was in, for 10,000 miles. I had noted the ScanGuage mileage before the oil change: when driving at 60 mph, it was about 58 mpg. After the oil change, the ScanGuage was consistently above 60 mpg for the same driving conditions-- a period of a few days before leaving on this trip. I can't say if the Castrol "aged" during use, only that there was a mileage difference at the oil change-over.

I can't be sure about anything-- all is very subjective, except maybe for full tank mileage. The car may be running a little quieter with the Elf than it did with the Castrol. I would need more time to say if it starts easier.

My view so far is that Elf is excellent oil. (Elf Evolution CRV 0W30) Many people on this list are using it.

Maximum effort in achieving MPG's - and freezing my jiblets in the process. Wanted to see what was possible in the winter.

Time to investige. The low fuel economy has progressed long enough to indicate that it is more than a one-time abberation. The larger than OEM tires don't account for the difference from what I'd expect. They are about 10% larger meaning I went 10% more miles than the uncorrected odometer reading posted above. I'm down about 30% from my expectations.
I heard what I suspect is a dragging rear brake. I may have a stuck caliper that is gobbling fuel.
I'm sure that my current short commute is similarly not helping any.

A/C use and unexpected traffic, a fact of life. My car is at its peak and is everything VW told me it would be, maybe a bit more. More important now is how reliable it is and the cost over the 250k life.

3rd tank since switching to Aligator. Mileage is up on average about 4-6 MPG. This tank was my high, my low was 44, but that was literally 5 mile trips 4x a day spaced hours apart with 10 degree weather. The car never did get off the thermostat at all practically the whole tank. I was expecting 38, but was very happy to see 44!

If it was the first fillup--the previous owner probably didn't vent (I am assuming that you did)...

It's Ventectomied according to his sig.

66 MPG is EXTREMELY hard to do, even more so in the winter.

At 52 MPH (55 MPH indicated) I got 58 MPG. To get 66 MPG.... can you say top gear at 50 MPH :)

Always wondered if your higher than average MPG's were due to your A3/setup or driving style. Assuming your fill is accurate, I think it's safe to say it's driving style. We must drive similarly:)

Thanks Ernie for the feedback on the new ELF 0W-30 oil.
Does sound quieter. Is an excellent oil! Not as expensive as Motul, good!
All we need to hear now is more MPG :D !

Thanks!

PS. ODO is getting close to 274K !

turnpike at 50mph. about 4oz of powerservice. same speed. nice and slow. i drive for MPGs

I did the ventectomy AS SOON AS i got the car. within 1hr. then filled up.

good guess. 50mph. 3 cold starts. each trip was about the same miles.

as for other stuff....
-i am doing an oil change this weekend. i spotted a grease monkey sticker in the window. w/a 3k mile change interval. needless to say i will be putting in 505.1 or 506.1,
-fuel filter will be changed... its looks corroded!?!? might just be salt.. i dont know. i dont trust it.,
-and of course oil filter
-and air filter will be changed.
-Tranny oil might be changed too the 4th-5th doesnt feel too good. its probably low on tranny oil

if you drive right you WILL get the higher mileage that you want. you just have to be understanding you will get NOWHERE fast. a trip to philly that would take most anyone 1hr 30 mins takes me 2hrs.

I short shift my gears (i shift where i have been told they are most efficent)

if anyone has any more questions. shoot them out.

BTW i love this engine setup. i love hearing that turbo spool it sounds COMPLETELY different than my MKIII did.:D

my PP357s are going to go on friday i think.

48.3 MPG....Winter Driving with Soft Blizzaks I guess. A far cry from 57 MPG this past summer but still better than any gasser. Actually 48 MPG is what I was getting when I first bought the car and before I learned all the tricks from the other members. I'd love to try the interstate at 50MPH for the whole tank to see if I can break the 60MPG mark.

Well dang, just missed again the 700 mile club. I had no way to extract the extra out of that tank. At least not via the guage. That last bit in the red zone really drops fast. No way can I get better than maybe 50 miles once I hit the red zone. I was at 663 when the buzzer came on. So I only got 29.9 miles once the buzzer came on. No hotrodding this last tank. That is not what others have said they get after the buzzer goes off. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Thought for sure I'd be joining the club this time. Not

I've gotten more fuel in my NB and it had not hit the redzone yet. I am not sure how many gallons are left when it hits the redzone ("nominally" approximately 1.9 US gallons,) but I have never had it measured.

By far my worst bit of mileage in this car. Conditions were terrible for economy the last couple weeks around here, plus I was driving faster than normal. I also lost some fuel installing the .205 nozzles. haha
