YES! I think it's great packaging. The leatherette is cheaper than leather and every bit as good (speak from experience: our JW is leather, our PS is leatherette). A trip computer is essential to extracting maximum economy-dynamic feedback. Again, experience of PS vs JW. I can live without the sunroof, though they're in the "nice to have" category.

I should be in the market for a new diesel starting around mid-2007. Hope they last that long.

I'd rather save a few grand, leave off the trip computer (it's called a map!), they can keep their pay as you go "radio", and the gay spoiler. Oh yeah last time I checked larger wheels take away gas mileage, lose the 16 inchers. Put it in a reasonably priced golf and maybe.

Well, I agree with the spoiler and Sirius but I like my trip computer. I'm anxious to see if they'll package it differently in Canada. I know that our base Passat GLS here was like your GL, and my GLS with "luxury" package was like your base GLS.

I'm a bit astonished/confused. So this means this carry over model will be available after regular production of MKV's has ceased? (I had thought this already happened, not sure what "CW40" mentioned in the article is?) It appears they "dodged" the emissions with the strict auto/manual regs? COuld anybody clarify?

Otherwise, I think it's pretty cool, like the diesel badge and the heavy duty floor mats, it seems like the car has what a lot of diesel buyers are looking for. But most of all, I like that more diesels will be available for a longer period of time.

Im also confused about the "long-range" abilities of this car, I assume they are the same as the current? They aren't making the tank bigger, are they??

"CW" probably refers to calendar week -- in this case, the first week in October.

We were all suprised to see this. The word reached our dealership on Friday 8/18 and we've been told that "We'll get what Vw sends us".

We won't have these cars long on the lot if at all-- as we've pulled out TDI customer lists for the past 3 months and have started pre-selling them for customers who didnt buy because of color or transmission availability.

For Clarification-- now current production laws in the US allow for model year production until Dec 1, instead of August/September which has been the case in previous years. That's why the cars will be available in a special End Of Model Year production run.

Clarification:
Yes-- CW refers to Calander week.
No-- the Tank isnt bigger. The comment is just a comment on the "long-range" capability of the TDI as opposed to the Gas version. (615 miles tdi vs 435 miles 2.5 gasser at average consumption.)

The referenced Trip computer isnt navigation- it's a readout of current vehicle conditions, It appears to be just like the current Pkg 2 multifunction steering wheel.

You can track miles until empty, set a speed warning, Tank MPG, Real time MPG (Really helpful to learn how to drive the "torque" and see how subtle pedal fluctuations affect the mileage), time driven, average speed since last reset, and if it's the same as the Pkg 2 trip computer, you can set the interior lighting and readout preferences.

With the Multi-function steering wheel you can operate the stereo and trip computer. (again, if it's the same as the pkg 2)

Prices exclude Destination/Delivery. $630 for most regions

Is that the invoice price or MSRP? That would be a great price for all of that if it is MSRP! Especially this late in the game... I went to one dealer here in SA this week and they only had 3 TDI's. All three were $27,399 MSRP I think they were PKG 2's. The salesman told me that VW is just loading them with stuff now because they know they will sell. I bought a 0 pkg for much less just two months ago but now they don't offer those anymore. Nor are they offering Shadow Blue as a paint choice anymore. I guess my 0 pkg Shadow blue is now a "special edition" rare find!!! I'll start the bidding at $35,000 ...do I hear $36,000? hee hee :-)

And the Mexicans are striking! Now isn't that ironic?!
Personally, I'm glad my TDI doesn't have that "diesel" tag on the side. The TDI badge is enough for me.

Memo to VW execs:

Ok, good ideas! However, I'd like to add in some comments:

1 - The "options" on the TDI's have always been sparse. For example, when I bought my 2002, you could not dress a TDI like a GLI. You have to stop making people think this engine is any different besides the awesome longevity and gas mileage. So offer it with special stuff, that's cool - BUT make sure that any option with a gasser is available on the TDI.

2 - As for point #1 - some like their TDI's fully dressed, others like there's with just the engine (literally). Let the customer dictate what they want or don't want. Offer all the engines that are in europe over here. Ditto with the cars (lupo, etc).

3 - Offer the cars without the fancy electronics to start and let us choose what toys we want - Sirius/XM/displays/amps/etc.

4 - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you make enough manual transmissions!

5 - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure that you offer the crushed velour as a seat option. I CAN'T STAND the leather or leatherette seats and the crushed velour on my 2002 is the cat's meow. Every single person who's ever ridden in my car says it's the most comfortable car they've ever ridden in - because of the nice cushy soft cloth seats. It's actually cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Bottom line - LET US CHOOSE!

brucetmoose: Well, optioning it like a GLI doesn't make sense, unless they sold a GLD with a VE115 or something. (Then again, they probably could have gotten away with a VE90, as they sold 2.slow Mk4 GTIs... )

And, you couldn't get ANY 4-cyl in GLX trim...

So it fits in their system, anyway...

GAS mileage should be "infinite" at all times since a TDI uses zero GAS. I agree...ditch the 16 inchers.

I like the DIESEL badge! Notice it doesn't say TDI! VW doesn't appear to be embarassed about putting the D-word on their cars anymore (we can all thank GM for the cause of that).

The DIESEL badge might make a good addition to current and previous MY TDIs.
