Yeah, wait until I post the followup after Jason and I track through the possibilities for power loss on my B4V. With no codes to work with and a pretty good maintenance history it looks like it might be a fun one to follow... Gremlins I tell you... And Gremlins he can kill...
cheers,
K

My lawyer finally sent me an opinion regarding a case against VW. They do believe I have a case and the next step is a letter from my lawyers to VWoA.
The "new" engine is still great (other than a check engine light) and running happily on B-20 with outside temps in the single digits to upper 20's. Need to take it out on the highway and get it nice and warmed up this weekend.

Just a follow-up.
The case has been dropped due to the deep pockets of VWoA. It was going to cost 3x's the money spent already to continue on. Sad.....

You would think the charge air cooler would have a maintenace schedule - I can nt find one in my manual. - I think at 25 k I will pull the lower hose and have a look. Can this be cleaned without removing it. I am looking at the bentley and it say front bumper cover must be removed to unbolt..

EASY to drain it. Pull of the 10mm nut on the frame rail, slide the clamp back, pull of the hose. Have drain pan ready in some cases and be SURE to stay out of the way. You could get a NASTY bath.
FWIW there is a local guy here with a blown engine. Went in for an intake cleaning at the same dealer as DHBEAR and the engine probably did the same thing. They are fixing it but it's anyone guess who will pay for it.
He has been emailing me and another shop that said that this is not the shops fault as it's not their responsibility to check the inter cooler as it's not part of the procedure. I check EVERY TIME. Just not worth the risk for less than 10 minutes of work. This is the same guy that makes comments about me, but not by name on his web page of "We’re not here to teach you about TDI s, there are enough sites about that. Our goal is to let you know that you don’t have to pay unreal dealer prices to get what you hope is good service or have some guy in his garage fix your car and tell you it’s a great deal. " Nice huh? Sheesh, and I used to send him a lot of business for other than TDI cars.
I digress...
Anyway I'll get photos of the part and get them up soon.

Jason - thank you for that info - seems like such a minor thing to do. We all tend to be lazy, I am different than no one else. Still such a minor task I really think VW should include this as a maintenace.
I will do the LM purge at 20k as you rec'd when I change the fuel filter.

Checking/draining your intercooler every 25-30k miles is a good idea. Also, there are a few options for CCV filters on the market (or home-built options). Personally, I have an Old Navy CCV filter on my Golf. I checked the intercooler at 50,000 and 100,000 miles, and there was NO liquid oil in the intercooler either time. Wiping a clean rag showed that there was residue in there, but no real liquid oil. I clean the O.N. filter every 5,000 miles.
Jason, sounds like a real mess. It is really too bad that this has taken up so much time and money.

Has anyone done a nice pictorial of cleaning the intercooler here? (if not, I could do one when I do ours this spring. If someone has though, I could instead use it to make sure I do it right )

Mike, do you have one of the cable-operated clamp tools? You'll be doing yourself a favor if you pick one up before tackling this job. On other people's cars (since mine didn't need it), I have removed the turbo-to-intercooler pipe (using clamp tool, and removing the nut inthe middle of the pipe), then remove the intercooler-to-EGR pipe (using the clamp tool). After that, just use whatever means you have at your disposal to dump some degreaser/hot soapy water into the intercooler. You might want to plug the bottom with a rag or something similar, so that the cleaner actually fills the intercooler. Drain, repeat if necessary, and rinse with hot water. Let it drain and dry for a few minutes, then soak up and water near the bottom outlet with a rag. Just make sure there is no standing water in the intercooler or and of the hoses/pipes before putting it back together.
