Default No TDIs in any US VW models in 2007

Sorry if this repeats what is already somewhere on this site, but I just talked with a VWOA rep. today and he told me that because of new EPA rules VW will not sell ANY TDI cars in the US during the 2007 model year. No Golfs. No Jettas. No Passats. No TDIs at all.

He also said that the new Passat will not have a TDI option through 2006 and 2007. The earliest would be 2008, if the new TDI engine VW is working on meets EPA approval.

So, if this is correct, hang onto your TDI! Or buy a new Jetta now in 2006. Because there will be none in 2007.

Again, sorry if this repeats what you already know.

yeah been covered a few times and true, they are switching to the common rail from what i've heard/read, and also needing to meet the new tougher emissions as well

We'll see. This is one reason I went ahead and bought a 2006 TDI to add to my "fleet." I will say that I take everything VWOA says with a huge salt mine. But IF they have a "hiatus" of TDIs then I'm set until they "bring back" the TDI. Personally I believe that IF they pull the TDI for model year 2007, I don't think it will be back until model year 2009. VW, evidently hasn't come up with a diesel emissions system that The EPA will buy. In addition, all I've read says that any new system would be "poisoned" by sulfur and ULSD is mandated for 2007, with full implementation by 2008 and I don't think it will be nationwide until Dec 31, 2008 at the earliest. Then some say VW will be switching to a common rail diesel to replace the unit injection, with these three factors I think 2009 model year could be optimistic. The main thing that will "light a fire" under VW is if Mercedes keeps selling Diesel and if any other manufacturers bring diesels to the US.

The EPA released a proposal a couple weeks ago, slightly relaxing the regulations on diesel cars for the 2007-2009 model years. Right now that proposal is in the "comments" phase, so the manufacturers can't make any plans for 2007 until the new regs are final.

So, I don't think anyone can state with 100% certainty that there will be or won't be any 2007 TDIs. No matter how high up he is in the corporate hierarchy.

But if I can hazard a guess: there will be 2006 Jetta TDIs shipping right up until December 31 2006. And there will be 2007 Jetta TDIs. And there will be 2007 Golf TDIs, but probably not til early in the 2007 calendar year. And Passat TDIs sometime after that.

Last I had heard, there were going to be:

2006 Jettas and New Beetles, as it is now
2007 Jettas, in VERY limited quantities
2008 full range

This was before the Tier 2 relaxation stuff came about, though.

VW can sell 06 TDIs as long as they would like but the catch is there is a cut off date for building 06 models under 06 emissions rules . That date use to be July 1 of each year . I'm not sure of the 06 model year cutoff date .

IIRC the only rule about model years is that there cannot be two Januarys in a model year. I have no idea if this applies to emmissions as well.

This is one of the reasons why I bought a 2005 PD Jetta Wagen last year and added it to my "fleet" of ONLY DIESEL VEHICLES (no gassers).
