That's the spirit!
And to think there was at least one category winner from Minnesota.....

A friend of mine wants his chance at the Askov-to-Duluth test, and he will get his chance tomorrow. So, I will post two fills tomorrow: the top-up to start his run, and then the fill in Duluth to see how he did.

AC almost never: Are you crazy??? I lived in Phx for a few years and would cook my lunch time burro on my dash
I was ahead of the solar cooker that you see now. But I ALWAYS ALWAYS ran the AC when it started to get warm. I know that it is a dry heat but hot is hot

I wonder if there would be any support for a handicapping system. We already have best in category, so we have felt the need to make allowances for some.

One of the things I really like about this contest is that it runs entirely on the honor system. So, I think we might factor in such things as the fact that a particular member cruises on the highway at 75 (taking his word on it) while another super-mileage member drives at 55 on the highway. I know we have a graph here somewhere that shows how much mileage you lose, say, for every mph over 60.

I know I am proposing something very complicated. Still, wouldn't it be great if we gave more people a chance to be #1?

Probably what I would propose would be to have cold winter climates be a separate category from November through March. Overall, the only allowance (if any) that I would make would be for the car and for winter fuel.

I don't believe that would be the way to go. Perhaps in a different topic, but not for this one. My reason:

This is a competition to determine who can do the best mileage. It’s about what you can do with your car both by modifications to your car and modifications to your driving habits. If I can get 70mpg in my car by driving only on ice in order to lower my coefficient of friction don't penalize me, but praise my superhuman ability to put ice in front of my car. At most put me in a separate category with the person who removed his rear seat and re-geared his car.

but if I drive the speed limit and you drive 15 over on the same road we are in this competition together. If you want to do better mileage than me, lower your speed. That's the nature of the competition. Yeah, we're really just comparing who can baby his/her car the most in order to get the best mileage. Some people will not be able to compete with the 50k per year drivers in this forum, but that's ok. It's nice to see the spread of real world mileage’s.

If you want to get scientific about it and compare cars to see whose car can get the best theoretical mileage we are going to need to get everyone together and do some serious limitation of variables. I would like to see this, but in a different thread.

right now I think we're doing well with the brief summation of usage and car stats. I believe this competition is doing just what it's suppose to do. Encouraging people to modify their cars and driving behaviors in order to eek out every last mile they can get from each gallon of diesel.

there must be a curve, some cars will do better than others in stock conditions. If you feel you're on the low end of the curve then I would suggest trying to gtg and tune your car. In the meantime, report your mileage and do what you can to get up to the top.

may the best car and driver win

So how do we join the competition ?

I've been keeping track of my mileage since I bought the car over 2 years ago - I just assumed a 2000 NB Automatic was probably out of the competition....

Simple. Post the mileage and fuel records from June, and you're in.

I'm proving that automatic-transmission Beetles can get it done, too.

First June Fillup.... as temperature goes up, my mileage goes down.

631.6 miles / 14.25 gallons = 44.32 mpg.

$2.419 for Premium B5.

They switched to the Gigantor nozzle on 1 side of my B5 pump. I didn't notice until I had swiped my card. Pump would not stay on even on the lowest "latch" setting.

Took forever to fill up!
