It's May! and it's time for the competition to restart. I'll take care of the spreadsheet again, unless anybody has complaints.

Congrats to watercop on the win last month at an astonishing 65mpg. And congrats to all the subcategory winners.

As for posting:
There's not any particular way that you must post. Just be sure to give me miles and gallons (or KMs and Liters, I can make the conversion). If your profile is incorrect just shoot me a PM and I'll take care of it and update at the end of the month. That goes for anybody without a profile too...

So! Here's to not letting your speedometer go over 60MPH and your tach not over 2250 RPMs!!

This months competition:

already two fillups, eh Rob.

You ever tried going past halfway on your Fuel Guage? You even know what it sounds like when the light comes on?
It's so loud it'll probably scare the hell outcha.

I agree. I've heard it once. If you're not expecting it you'll jump. That along with the *ding* that goes with a CEL (heard that once too). Engine overboost *sigh*

I ws going around an off ramp once and my wife almost made me drive the car off the road when she hit my arm (she gets startled easily in the car from too many car accidents in her past). Still scares her whent he washer fluid gets low too.

Thanks for the congrats - I have the same driving habits as some of the runners-up but better gearing and lighter oil. It'll take a million miles of savings to pay off the gears, but my engine is scheduled to grenade any day now owing to the light oil. Watch for the falling pieces after the big bang.

I'm out this month, and possibly next owing to ACES additive testing. Testers have been asked not to post intermediate results.

first fill of the month

4/2 12.678 gal B20 532.5 miles driven (at high highway speed 70+ mph) produces 42.001 mpg.

This will become my new standard... long gone are the days of driving 55-65... i can't take the sub-par ranking

Guys like watercop make me aim for bottom of the barrel since there is NO WAY I can beat him
Hat's off to you 50+ mpg guys... If you're ever on I95 or I85 and see a silver streak TDI.. it's probably me

Still got the bike rack, motul 505.01 oil, 40psi all corners 22K+ on the ODO

Like watercop I won't be at the top this month. Have at it me mates! My current tank is a "just for fun" one and I expect to only get about 50 mpg. Then I'm going to run a B25-30 mix and don't know how that will impact mileage.

After that I'm strongly considering a B99 mix. I hope to make the top 10 and be the top B fueled driver.

Hey, did you read watercop's post?-- he's not in the competition this month. Also, your mileage isn't so bad considering the speed you were driving. My experience says an extra 5 mph of speed lowers mpg by 10%

On May 1, I left Fresno, California, at 6:45 AM, drove to Pleasant Grove, Utah, arriving about midnight. (Made some stops along the way for visiting and rest.) Temperature varied from 50 F to 90 F (at Las Vegas). Used no AC. Conditions varied a lot, some wind and rain, but speed was held at 62.7 +/-0.5 for the entire trip, except for about five miles in city traffic and 55-60 mph for 30 miles during high headwinds. Speed /Odo readings include calibration corrections. I sailed over mountains and grades without going off of cruise control. Elevation varied from about 150 ft (Fresno) to 6000+ (CA and So. UT). (I have never noticed any effect on mileage of going up and down hills. However, hot days at high elevation do give better mileage.)

Miles: 794.2 Gallons: 13.011 Avg: 61.04 mpg

I think summer fuel is back. I use no additives or engine modifications, dealer-supplied Mobil 1 0w-30. I do have slightly oversize Michelin Energy S8 tires set at 40 psi and a drag reducer to lower the Beetle's high aero drag.

You gotta want it!

Maybe I'll get lucky and pull enough long trips to burn all my ACES additive to report late this month

OOPS - belay that - Nick and Wes probably won't want anyone reporting until all the results are in...sheesh...it'll be months!

On a technical note, I don't observe a mileage effect in hilly terrain unless it is mountainous, by which I mean braking, rather than just intelligent momentum management, is neccessitated on downslopes and curves

Today was a nice day, do I decided to go up to Gooseberry Falls State Park. It's located about 12 miles up the shore of Lake Superior from Two Harbors, MN, which is about 25 miles northeast of Duluth.

However, I decide to see what I get repeating the fuel-efficiency experiment I tried in April.

So, I stop at the same station in Finlayson, MN, and record these numbers as I top up for the trip:

5/8 - Finlayson, MN - $5.67
122.0 mi - 2.544 gal - 47.96 mpg - $2.229/gal - 4.65 ¢/mi
196.3 km - 9.630 L - 4.90 L/100km - 58.9¢/L - 34.63km/$

I then proceed to the test route, and generate these numbers, with an indicated speed of about 43 mph:

5/8 - Duluth, MN - $2.15
54.2 mi - 0.942 gal - 57.54 mpg - $2.282/gal - 3.97 ¢/mi
87.2 km - 3.566 L - 4.09 L/100km - 60.3¢/L - 40.57km/$

Not as good as last time. So, I get on the main roads again, and continue up to the park, mostly at 55-65 mph. I spend some time there, and then drive back toward home, and am wondering what kind of results I am getting driving 55-65. I find out soon enough.

5/8 - MN 61, milepost 10, St. Louis Co, MN - $3.50
87.1 mi - 1.549 gal - 56.23 mpg - $2.260/gal - 4.02 ¢/mi
140.2 km - 5.864 L - 4.18 L/100km - 59.7¢/L - 40.05km/$

I then decide to drive back home. I drove I-35 from Duluth; it is posted 70 mph; I drove it at 65, with the engine at about 2200 rpm, I arrive at a pump I use with some regularity, and get this result:

5/8 - Minneapolis, MN - $7.94
164.3 mi - 3.544 gal - 46.36 mpg - $2.240/gal - 4.83 ¢/mi
264.4 km - 13.415 L - 5.07 L/100km - 59.2¢/L - 33.30km/$

So my results for the day's testing:

5/8 - Totals for the day - $19.26
427.6 mi - 8.579 gal - 49.84 mpg - $2.245/gal - 4.50 ¢/mi
688.2 km - 32.475 L - 4.72 L/100km - 59.3¢/L - 35.73km/$

And for the month so far:

5/2005 - Month to date - $60.40
1225.7 mi - 27.739 gal - 44.19 mpg - $2.177/gal - 4.93 ¢/mi
1972.6 km - 105.004 L - 5.32 L/100km - 57.5¢/L - 32.66km/$

I did ok. This is my third tank on this car since I bought it.

749.7 Miles 15.68 gallons of Diesel=47.8125

[Driver] Blacksheep
[Car] 2000 Jetta TDI GLS
[Fuel] Pilot Truck Stop Diesel
[Speed] = 95% highway @ 65-70 mph / 5% city
[Shift] 2000 - 2750
[Terrain] flat
[Passengers] Never
[Weather] 70-85F
[Tires] 42 psi all tires; Kuhmo's
[Oil] Mobil 1 Full Synth. Truck & SUV 5w40

The weird thing is, the more I drive this car, the better MPG I get. Maybe I am learning how to drive it. The 1st tank I only got 42.83 MPG. The 2nd tank I got 47.34MPG. This last tank I got 47.8125 and I was not even try to drive slow, I even had the AC on and Hit 100MPH and was having fun, when i checked the milage, I was shocked. The first 2 tanks I drove slow and no AC.

Not gonna find any Prius owners bragging about getting 47 MPG while they are going 100!
That's the reason these cars are the greatest.

I just got my boost guage in, so hopefully I'll do better now that I can see what she's doing and can drive accordingly to keep boost down.
