Bad fumes from golf with missing cat/egr

Just got a 04 golf 2.0 gttdi
It's got no egr
Custom exhaust (no cat) straight through to 1backbox
My question is does it need a cat back in to get rid of exhaust gas smell,
Should it have a dpf on 2004

no dpf but should have a cat. It will stink without one I have read. Sorry I just saw you were not in the US. Don't know when dpf's were introduced over there. 2009 for the US.
