This is a door harness problem?

Hello,

I'm having an issue that I believe is a door harness problem, but wanted to verify that.

First, the backlights went out on the window switches on the driver's door a few months ago, but everything worked fine. A few weeks ago, I noticed I could not put the front passenger window up, but I could put it down. The window works fine from the passenger side switch. A couple days ago, the driver's window stopped going up or down.

I cannot test with the key as the lock on the door no longer works, I assume it wasn't put back together properly after VW replaced the door skin last year.

Do you guys think this is likely the harness and not some other problem?

I would definitely inspect the harness as a starting point. Certainly has symptoms like a door harness.

Most 2010 Jettas already had the newer style harness from the factory.

VCDS is your friend here. All that stuff can be checked easily.

I have had to replace window switches themselves, as they can and do go bad.

So I pulled the cover back a bit between the door and the pillar, and there looks to be some frayed wires there. The red/yellow wire at least (trying to get the image attachment to work). The car was built 10-10-2009 so may be the old harness type still.

Thanks all,

I was hoping to just put a butt splice on that wire as a temporary fix, but I don't have enough space to do that without removing the boot. According to DIYs you can't remove the boot without taking the door skin off. If that's true then I figure I may as well replace the entire harness at that point.

Understanding the diagnostics are much easier with VCDS I'm going to go ahead and order one. With the dieselgate warranty I just committed to this car for another 3-4 years (only going ~20k/year now, car has 310k on it already), and as it gets older lots of these wee things are going to keep popping up I'm sure.

Now that it is getting warm enough to want to use the window again...

VCDS Auto scan didn't show any faults related to this, but is there somewhere in the interface I can specifically check?

I've replaced the harness in both front doors now. No codes, just odd behavior. When I inspected the wiring, I had shielding that was cracked on both of them at the hinge. Since replacing the wiring with an updated harness, I've had no problems. But, I have a 2006, and like Oilhammer said, your door harness should be the more current one compared to what I started with. I say replace the harness, if you feel you can butt-splice correctly, go for it. I'm glad I spent the money on the harness and have not worried about it since.
