2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI 6 speed Manual
Hello all, thanks for your forum. I could use some help!

2012 Jetta Sportwagen, TDI, 6 speed manual. Purchased at 93,000 in 2/19. New tires/alignment. Hit raccoon, $3200 damage to front right including radiator support. Now has 100,900. Did the 20k service about 700 miles ago. All has been well (just a little disappointed in MPG).

Until a couple days ago: car starts just fine but... No power steering. Power steering light solid red. ECS light solid yellow. Not long after I get yellow flashing glow plug light. Tried the drive 20-30 ft, turn steering all the way left/right deals. Nothing.

I don't have VCDS yet, planning to get soon.

Battery: from 5/18, charger/tester shows 12.6 car off and when car running 14.1 volts. All fuses test out, except I'm honestly not sure how to test the square/boxy 100 amp fuse. Not completely sure on the fusible links (electrical is not my forte) but I believe they are OK.

Drive to town (Rural fella here, and deck over trailer was too steep to load car on it without lots of hassle) without power steering. VW dealer pulled up my codes. It may be easier to post a pic but I may not have permission to do that. But the print out he gave me is 3 pages long.

Including power steering control module 1309, steering angle sensor 778, TPMS control module 1325. I understand that is probably all because the power steering is the initial issue. Then steering sensor will not work, and TPMS not work.

Other codes:
Engine control module 1
1393 Cruise/brake switch (A) circ malfunction (static)

Door electronics driver side (0501?) as well as passenger side (0501?).

Radio, Dash Board codes.

Central Electric codes:
59 "terminal 30 for interior illumination" open circuit intermittent

778 steering angle sensor (no signal/communication static)

834 Signal for heated rear window activation (open circuit/short circuit to ground intermittent)

927 Terminal 30 Right (open circuit intermittent)

1309 Power steering control module (no signal/communication static)

1516 Terminal 30 Left (open circuit intermittent)

3266 Activation Relay for signal horn (open circuit/short circuit to ground intermittent)

3396 Supply voltage terminal 30 for central locking (open circuit intermittent)

Gateway codes:
778, 1309 no signal/communication static
1333 left rear door control module, no signal communication intermittent

Also...
526 Brake light switch (implausible signal Intermittent)

I'm hoping someone with some electrical understanding can help me pinpoint what is causing this. 'Preciate any help you can provide!!!

I think I would look for damaged wiring, perhaps related to the raccoon incident. Especially around the connection to the steering rack. I don’t think most of the codes mean much other than that the canbus (gateway)or body control module is getting weird signals from somewhere.

Could be wrong but I don’t think any of those codes relate to the ECM.

I should have been more clear... my angle was to see if it was covered under the emissions warranty. My point was IF the ECM was at fault.

In any event, you're probably right. There's a decent chance the wiring or connectors are suspect, either from impact or improper reinstallation. Probably the best place to start looking.

I'll be the first to admit I often struggle with modern electrical systems. I started wrenching for a living in 82'. Ha! Electronic ignition & fuel injection were primative relative to todays. But there are some things will be universal. An old timer (@ the time!) told me 90% of the time electrical issues can be traced to a bad ground or fauly connection. I stand by this even with todays complex systems. Fault has been engineeered out of quality high tech components for a large part. A bad ECM can be a fix... But what was the ROOT cause? Connection? Resistance?? Ground causing faulty sensor input? This can and will cause a domino effect as in your case.

I would appproach it as an ijsurance incomplete repair.

Emmisions most likely would be difficult for anyone to argue as a cause. A dealership must have reason to write the repair up under emmision coverage to even check out as such. But I have worked with some "creative" service writers and its worth a humble attempt.

Best luck to you

x2 to all of this.

Incomplete insurance repair would be the most likely scenario. They likely have some kind of guarantee on their work, perhaps you're within the time frame.

I suggested the possibility of ECM/emissions replacement because I had that happen, so I know it is possible. Good to have in your back pocket, just in case.

Not sure about the 2012 TDI, but my 2006 TDI had a major chassis ground work loose twice causing several steering fault codes and intermittent starting problems. Remove your air cleaner box and look for a chassis ground that may have worked loose. With as many fault codes as you have, the common denominator most likely a loose ground or other wiring issue.

Thanks Wilkins. I checked wiring from steering rack up to fuse box. Seems OK. Any particular grounds or other wires near the front/radiator that I should check? I don't think I'm a complete idiot, but every time I attempt to look at a wiring schematic I sure feel like it lol.

Preciate you Jellow. Glad to know I'm not the only one that struggles with electrical. Approaching it as insurance incomplete repair is a good idea, I think the body shop gave me a list of everything they did/touched so I could go back through that list and start checking. I'm wondering if you have any particular wires/grounds you think I should look for first?

Much oblige Ol' Rattler. I'll check underneath the air box. Always taking suggestions of where to look after that too.

And thanks, PRY4SNO, it's nice to have someone looking out for things I wouldn't think about.

Electrical issues sure are a challenge. I really appreciate you all giving some feedback and guidance!

Well still no luck. I took the airbox off, found the ground from steering rack, all clean. Scraped them down anyhow. While the airbox was off, I could see a lot of wiring, nothing appeared damaged etc. Tested fusible links, they're good to go. Is there anywhere I can find a list of where else to look for grounds, particularly up near the front?

Thanks for your help!

2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI 6 speed Manual
Hey all, just an update. I've been looking over it, calling folks, and had a buddy look at it too (who, as seems common, has and is familiar with the ALH and not so familiar with common rail and all the electronics of the 2012 version). No progress. After hitting a deer (yes that's right... over 300k driven in previous vehicles and exactly $0 damage and 0 deer/raccoons hit, I hit a deer with this same car.) I have a trip coming up soon so I finally caved and made an appointment with the dealership. They found a broken wire on brake master cylinder sensor, and replaced. Cruise control malfunction went away. They found a wire under the headlight assembly that was kinked. After removing headlight assembly the wire was completely broken under there. Fixed wire, cleared codes, all is well. It went straight to body shop for deer damage to be fixed so I haven't seen it. I'm hopeful that insurance or the body shop that fixed the raccoon damage pays the $375 bill. As another friend said it, 'wires don't kink themselves.' So I've connected it to not getting the wires in the proper place, or kinking wires while repairing raccoon damage. Thanks for your help!
