Sorry for the sarcasm. Post deleted. There are no inner or outer boots, just left and right. The part number is 1J0422831B. Just did a tie rod job on our '01 Golf...

Pops right on. Don't fully tighten the outer clamps until AFTER you have the alignment done because the boots should not be twisted during the toe adjustment. Let your alignment shop know so they can do the final crimp of the clamps when they're done.

Here a few pics when I replaced the Left Tie Rod on my 2000 Jetta

As can been observed, apparently water got in some how ....... but, I could not find a hole in the boot after a lot of inspecting ... thus, just reused it. As I recall, the procedure was fairly easy. Seems I used a rather heavy zip tie to secure it.

They need some force. Use zip ties, tighten the inner one then do the outer one after the alignment.

Uh, yes, and they cost me all of $8.99 at my FLAPS...
So that's $9 that you probably won't use again. That's a nice steak dinner. :D

I've had them in my tool chest for probably 25+ years and have used them on many cars for both steering racks and CV joints. :D

And please let me know where you can get "a nice steak dinner" for $9.00. I want to be sure to avoid that restaurant.

No worries - it is only a 2oz.-of-scraps steak. :p Then again, if you buy your own steak at the grocery store, you can do quite well for a $9.00 steak dinner!

Cheers,

PH

Just a quick one guys,

Putting a good second hand rack on my mk4 with the original rods and wondering if there is different size boots that cover the inner joints? Haven't dealt with plastic ones before and they seem like a right pig to get on. It's a proper zf rack and oem boots
Your first sentence would never pass as a question on Jeopardy.
It is a declaration of "wondering". ;)
Please laugh with me.
