Was driving my new (to me) Golf TDI (2005 GLS, manual transmission with 15,700 miles) with the windows down when I noticed a godawful tinny irregular rattling coming from the front of the car. As if something was loose and shaking around.
It was especially strong when the car was moving forward. Slightly noticeable at a stoplight with the car in neutral. It disappears when the clutch is pressed in.
Also, at the end of the drive, I noticed a slight burned smell, kind of like overheated clutch. And once in a while, and completely unpredictably, I got a nice transmission whine sound in 2nd-4th gears. Kind of like a pinion bearing on a classic Saab 900 (if anyone has owned one, you know what I mean).
WTH? I bought the car CPO and literally have driven it less than 100 miles. Anyone have any guesses as to what is going on?
Thanks!
