Seat back recliner adjustment knob install

Car: 2004 Jetta
Passenger seat

I removed the subject knob by simply pulling it off (hard!). However, when I went to re-install it, I broke the black retainer/spacer ring and now the knob won't stay on. I managed to find just the spacer ring (part. no. 1J0881493) but I'd like to know how to correctly install the knob so I don't break it again.

I searched extensively but didn't find the results I'm looking for.

Any luck? My friend broke my recline knob, and I have the same question.

It's pretty easy to put on, but the problem is taking them off without breaking.

Look at your other seat with a flash light for reference.

How do you take it off without breaking it? I'm replacing my seat cushion tomorrow.

Small flat screwdriver (iirc x2) and a small flashlight. Pry apart where you can see it being held, without breaking the tabs, carefully.

Can you leave the knob attached wen changing a lower seat cushion? And just loosen the trim?

Yep. Installed the cushion. Took 1.5 hours total with beers. Seat feels awesome. Now I need to fix this ac.

You need to pry off the inner ring first with a small screw driver then pull on the nob

How does one install one of these, the kind that has the inner thin locking(?) ring? (two pieces)



Do you put the two pieces together and then just push-snap them on, or do you put the inner thin locking ring on, then the knob, then somehow snap that locking ring on the knob?
