Obviously, if it allows you to start the engine in "reverse" (which it shouldn't) and doesn't allow it in "park" or "neutral" (which it should), there is a problem with the start interlock switch not coinciding with what position the shift linkage is actually in.

On that car, I don't know whether that switch is physically located in the console (at your shift lever) or at the transmission. One way or the other, the linkage and the switch, and any adjustments that may be involved, are where you need to focus your investigation.

If "R" is actually Reverse, and "D" is actually Drive, and "N" is actually Neutral, and "P" is actually Park, once the car is running, then the relationship between the shift lever and the transmission is correct, and the problem involves only the start interlock switch. If the actual functions of the transmission are different from what position the lever is in, then the problem is the connection between the shift lever and the transmission itself.

There are just too many to list....
The gear selector sensor on your Aisin automatic is atop the transmission case, near the air cleaner area. It sounds like yours is either bad, or the cable got messed up, which is usually caused by people not setting the parking brake properly, and allowing the transmission lock to hold the car on a hill, and then when you take it out of Park, the cable has to carry the force of yanking a little piece of metal the size of a tooth out from under the weight of the car.

There is an adjustment on that sensor, but it is not normally something that could get out of adjustment on its own.

I would want to use a scan tool to see what the TCM says, it may have already stored a DTC, or at least you can monitor the gear selector values as you move it to see what is happening.

Sorry to say it, but you need to get someone who knows what they are doing to look at the car and pay them for the diagnosis. If there is a local VW specialist mechanic, that's an option. If you don't know of one, the dealer is next. I hate to be blunt, but it sounds like you are not capable of diagnosing or repairing this ... and that means you have to pay someone else to do it. The internet is not capable of adequately looking, feeling, and hearing things, nor is it capable of turning a wrench.
