Personally, I've used Synchromesh fluid in my manual trans for the last 4 years and 100,000 miles (I'm definitely overdue for a fluid change, and have some more on hand for the next time I get my car in the air.)

If you want correct, it's this: https://www.idparts.com/oem-070-manual-transmission-fluid-g070726a2-p-1438.html The G052 oil that came in the cars has been superceded to the G070. There are a number of other gear oils that work fine in our transmissions, but since VW isn't terribly forthcoming regarding gear oil specs, the most correct oil is probably the OE.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is what you need. Just change it every timing belt. IIRC (if I recall correctly) you need 2 quarts.

I had Synchromesh in the 6sp. in past cars, but couldn't find it locally, so went with OEM stuff (~$30CAD for 2L) on my recent 5sp., and it's been great.
