Can Oil pump (balance shaft) noise come and go ?

It is only noticeable at idle and I think it would always come back at an idle until taken care of. There are some youtube videos with the dreaded noise.

I would get it fixed as soon as you can.

I have been listening to the youtube videos and its really hard to hear from the noise of the diesel itself on those videos..
On those videos is it similar to the noise of a dry running chain or what does it
sound like ?

Sounds like marbles in a can. sound varies with engine speed, as the chain tightens and loosens with acceleration and deceleration respectively. The tensioner retainers often break, resulting in greater noise, right before catastrophic failure.
