I bet it'd be just fine, could even use a muffler pipe expander to get a little bit of a lap joint for more strength

Mine is stainless... I had Matt Whitbread fabricate mine. It's been in use for almost 60K miles with no issues.

Matt is a friend of mine, I am a far cry from his skills when it comes to welding anything. I will probably be painting mine regardless
