2013 VW Vento 1.6TDI MT
Hello!

I am from India, have been using a Volkswagen Vento 1.6 TDI since 2013, and has run 80000kms. I love the car and the engine. I have not done the emissions software update as I like the engine in the present state of tune.

Anyway, I hope to learn more about the TDI in the forum

Hey there!

My name is Mike, I am currently stationed in Alaska. I just bought my first TDI and likely not my last! I have a 2002 Golf 4 Door TDI with a 5 speed. Eventually I will post a picture of it in the northern lights (thanks wifey!). I not new to cars or mechanics. I work on cars, motorcycles, and PWC's that I have owned. My car history is: CRX, 325i, frontier, 9-5, celica, audi A4 B5, silverado, elantra GT (currently still have), '06 Volvo v50 T5 6-speed AWD, MB Sprinter Motorhome (used to trek from NorCal to Alaska), cm250c (predecessor to rebel 250), FZR400 (in storage for restoration), Ninja 500 (short term commuter and flip), 2 side by sides (for my ROTC unit, GO UTES), '95 Seadoo XP, '01 Seadoo GS.

The list is long, but cheap. With the exception of the Motorhome and Elantra (wife's first and last brand new purchase) every car was priced lower than $6k. I am not entitled, I bust my butt and get bored real quick with cars and sell them. I usually break even or lose a little money. I am a U of Utah grad in mechanical engineering, but would rather wrench than CAD.

Glad to be part of this community, looking forward to learning and eventually teaching!

Cheers,
Mike

You'll probably only do it once. If you don't have a service history, then you might as well do it now and then not worry about it for another 350,000-500,000 miles.

2002 Jetta Wagon streaking between window panes

Hi. I'm looking for suggestions about streaking (looks like fog) in between the window panes on my 2002 Jetta. This is NOT on the inside or outside, but in between and makes it hard to see when the sun hits it just right. Any suggestions on what to do?

You'll need to find a glass specialist on that one. To me, sounds like new windshield time.

ALH going into Samurai
Sorry if this is not where this should go.
I'm doing a conversion of a ALH TDI into a Samurai and before I pull the engine out I want to set the crank on TDC, only problem is I can't find any marks on the flywheel. I would think even an after market flywheel must have a timing mark since that's the only mark referenced to set the crank to TDC. I've moved it one tooth at a time and no luck. The new flywheel has the mark to align with the Samurai index but I want to replace the timing belt while it's on the engine stand. Are there marks on the front behind the crank pulley or anywhere else I could use? I would like a second way to verify the new flywheel anyway.
Thanks,
John

Hi there! New to the tdi forum and hopefully getting at 2006 this afternoon. It does have high mileage but i'm not worried about it. It thankfully is a manual transmission that has had it replaced for about 1800.00 and he has receipts.

Sadly i noticed that it had a hole in the intercooler pipe rubber hose. I am not sure if this is causing the low speed low rpm bucking or not. I have been reading where some have had ideas of the MAF sensors a few other things but their issues were problems at higher rpms. Where mine is in the lower. If anyone has some information on this let me know as i would love to pick it up this evening as long as it's nothing too serious! Even if it needed a new engine replaced i would probably still get it as long as it isn't too terrible to have rebuilt or replaced. I look forward to hearing ya'lls thoughts! it does have 230k on it.

Supposdly the timing belt has been done and has around 20k-30k miles left but no proof so ill be looking into that sooner then later.

Hello from WI. Joined yesterday. Don't have a TDI at the moment but am researching them and trying to help a buddy who has a problem with his chipped '01 Beetle. I've dabbled with the old 1.6 mechanically governed diesels quite a bit and still have a '86 Golf.

Howdy everyone new here and new to tdi but not new to working on my own stuff ... been a motorcycle tech for years

Picked up a 2002 jetta tdi 375××× miles ...body had seen better days but motor and trans run strong (traded a motorcycle for it)
I've replaced the passenger side lower control arm, the alternator (140a out of an 09ish passat) about to rebuild the injector pump with seals from dieselgeek here in TX. Any advice would be great

I also have a 2002 passat v6 4motion (nontdi) I picked up as well (needs work as well lol)

I just traded my Nissan NV3500SL van for a certified pre-owned 2014 Passat TDI SEL. I love it so far and the fuel mileage home was a nice change. I had a 2012 Jetta TDI SEL 6 speed for a little while then I went stupid and traded it for an '06 GTO. I'm glad I'm back in a VW.

Sounds like you had a runaway and possible hydrolock. At this point you need to assess the engine internals, probably valves, but could be piston/bent connect rod.
There are things that can knock, like injection pump, tensioners, clutched pulleys, best to rule those out first just in case you got lucky.

A new Golf TDI owner

That is, the TDI isn't new, just me. I bought my black 2000 Golf TDI back in August, and it has been one of the cars I've had that I can truly say that I love. It had 209000 miles on it, which gave me some trepidation, as well as that it was on one of those car lots out on Pacific Highway that sell other lot's rejects. This one just looked special though, very straight and clean, paint in good shape. I asked the salesman if they had any maintenance records, and he said no. I did happen to notice the oil change sticker in the corner of the windshield, saying the next change was due at 218,000, indicating a very recent change. The sticker was from a VW dealer, and I thought it interesting that whoever owned the car previously would still take the car with that many miles on it to the dealer for oil changes. I wondered what else they had done to it, so I told the salesman I'd call him the next day, then called the VW dealer, gave them the VIN, and asked them what their history on the car was. Just within the prior year, it had a new timing belt (190000 mi), new brakes, head gasket, a tuneup, and others. I called the car salesman back said I'd take it, asked if he'd take $2500, and the deal was done!

The car runs fine, but from what I'm reading on these forums I could be getting a lot better than the 40.82 average MPG I've been getting.

Congratulations on getting a good deal on a well-maintained TDI. West Coast TDIs tend to sell for considerably more than they do in the rest of the country.

Your fuel mileage is actually pretty typical; it's about what I got during the five years I drove mine in California, and close to my lifetime average, though I do better in the spring and fall.

You did not say whether yours has a manual or automatic transmission.

Hello from Ontario.
Joined about 1y ago.
Currently driving a 09 jetta TDI dsg. Love it, for most part.
Got Gen 1 Fix (rather than buyback) 1 week ago.
Hoping I can find contacts of kind member(s) near me(cobourg) that can advise on a snapped front spring and 2 dash lights (ongoing research)
TDI-Topics of my interest: Contacts for who in my area a) can privately do quality schedule maintenance (and repair) on '09, b) has warm garage, tools, c) has experience maintaining hardware mods ie espar d5, contain flow, CP3, upgraded turbo. d) advice on Parts/brands/stores/mechanics/ to trust/regard highly, diagnostics/vcds where/who, what can be bartered for if on a budget.
But otherwise looking forward to being helpful somehow :)

Newbie here looking for a TDI vehicle.

Your suggestions for a TDI I can travel from Houston/Galv area to Deming NM area twice a year; possibly able to rest/sleep inside. I like the 04/05 Passant wagon but really like a std shift car. Not a deal breaker though.
Also, I have a 1984 Rabbit (gas) I could convert or work into a trade. (An original New Mexico desert car, little to no rust!
After lurking here, I'm a little unsure which vehicle would be best... There are lots of qualified opinions here. But, it's a long way across West Texas.

Always wanted a clean example of the ALH 5 Speed TDIs. Found a 2002 Jetta Wagon 5 speed with 167k miles - 1 owner.

I found it on Craigslist after it was posted for 6 hours. Contacted the owner and there were 3 parties before me. Made an appointment with the original owner and just hoped for the best.

2 of the parties were no shows and 1 lowballed, offering 3k. I was a little late on getting a friend to drive me so I missed the appointment. Owner ended up showing it to another party before me. I told the owner I would bring 4k cash.

The seller told the buyer that I may offer 4k. The buyer offered him 4000 but he only had 3500 in hand.

Finally got there to take a look. It was not the cleanest in terms of interior and exterior conditions but the owner had a whole stack of maintenance records.

Almost all of the expensive repairs were done and there was about 10k worth of repairs from 120k miles and on. It almost made me feel like the shop lied to the owner to get more business but I have no evidence on that...

I ended up picking it up for 3800. Pretty sure it's not the deal of the century but the maintenance records made it worth it for me because I didn't have to do anything after buying it.

So far, I'm liking it.

2006 JETTA TDI Problem Mechatronic

I've been searching the different threads to find information regarding the DGS transmission issue(s) I am having with our 2006 TDI Jetta. My wife was driving on I-5 at 70mph when it suddenly downshifted nearly causing her to get rear ended. PRND light began flashing shortly before this occurred. Managed to drive it home @ 15-20 mph & a friend pull codes, U170 & U171 which from what I can tell are module communication error codes and something to do with the Mechatronics. One thread indicated there could be a grounding problem causing this but most seem to identify symptoms as the Mechatronics unit itself. I have mechanical ability to change this with help of a YouTube video but I foresee a potential problem with programming it after it is installed.\
My questions are:
1. could this be a fairly simple & cheap grounding problem and where should I look for it?
2. Is it possible to program the new Mechatronic, what is needed to do this? 3. Is there anywhere other than Volkswagen Dealer to get one of these Mechatronics, my internet searches provide 0 results for my VIN.
I should add, I and my wife have owned VW's for years although always the reliable "Beetle" of the 60's & 70's and we decided to purchase this Jetta prior to the government emission requirements changed new even though VW & the Dealer took severe advantage price wise (God and EPA are only ones who can justify more requirements on an engine that consistently gets 45+ mpg) ... 150,000 miles, can't complain on MPG but lots of other issues have definitely dampened our enthusiasm for VW's. Although I didn't know about it until this happened to us, I see where this downshift at high speed has been a problem for quite some time with no recalls or notices from VW. Huge SAFETY issue... but very happy to have found this forum. Thanks!!!

Hi everyone!
I just bought my first TDI off of copart, and there where numerous TDIclub stickers on it (which lead me here!). The vehicle in question is a 2002 Volkswagen Golf GLS alh with a 5speed. It was in a minor accident and was totaled out by the insurance company. I'm now looking to get this up and running to be my summer runabout. So I'll be looking to everyone here for some sound (sage) advice. Thank you.
