Default What starter for vanagon with 1.9td diesel bellhousing g60 flywheel

1982 vanagon diesel. Trying to figure out what Im missing here. Have a vanagon with a 1.9td that had a 1.6d flywheel and original clutch which was slipping. Read up on some forums and it seemed that the setup to use was the g60 flywheel vangon 228mm disc and mk3 jetta vr6 pressure plate. The first problem was two tabs on the pressure plate hitting the clutch arm pivot area on the bellhousing, ground those off and now since the g60 flyhweel ring gear is closer to the bellhousing the starter gear cant extend fully to operate. I saw another post where an adapter was made to space the starter back. Is that the only option?

Vanagon diesel starter should work fine. Get the newer Bosch one with gear reduction.

so i confirmed that i do have the original 1.6 starter. still seem to have the wrong clearance to the ring gear from the face of the bellhousing. are people who have done this using the flywheel that came with the 1.9 originally- that would make sense? Wish the engine we sourced came with a flywheel- would have saved alot of guess work.

solution was to remove material on the starter nose between end bushing and ring gear. all works great now
