Dealer say this is the oil? Is this correct?

Hi all,

Went to the dealer like usual today to get my oil for my 2005 Passat diesel BHW 2.0. I always get the Castro’s edge professional that says 505.01 on the front. This time they said it’s been replaced by the Professional OE. It’s does not state it is 505.01 compliant in the back. Just says 50500/50200. They said it’s covered under that but I’m not totally convinced. Does anyone know about this or able to give some insight? Thank you in advance!

I always use the same oil. I take my vin to the dealer, he match's the vin to the oil. They do have a new version, I always opt for the old version.

If you get the oil at the VW dealer they most likely will give you 5W30 for the PD cars instead of 5W40.
Not good!
Always request the 5W40. Your camshaft will thank you.

You should probably have a look at the camshaft to see what is going on.
Changing back to 5W40 won't hurt but of course won't help to fix any damage that is already there.

Thanks for all the replies! Took the oil back, just cause it didn't say 505.01 and I didn't feel comfortable. What sites do you buy your oil from?

Any 505.01 that is in the 5w40 flavor works fine. Popular choices include Pentosin High Performance II, which I believe was factory fill. LiquiMoly is also popular, and they have two products that fit the bill with TopTec and HiTec. I think one is full synth and other is semi-synth, but both work. Motul is another product with good reputation.

Just buy a oil change kit from one of the trusted vendors here. Should be ~$45 and includes 5L oil with filter and new drain plug. Just stay away from the 5w30 options.

Castrol has been factory fill on VWs for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately the current Castrol 505.01 oil is a 5w30, since VW changed the spec in 2009 or so. So there are other oils that are better for preventing cam wear.

There is still a valid part number for the "Genuine" VAG certified 505.01 in the 5w40 weight. And I believe it is still Castrol. Just most dealerships won't carry it and will be a special order. But it lives on: part# G-052-167-M2

There may be a part number, but I doubt the oil exists. I've not seen any in years. And I also doubt you can order it.
