Length of pipe after cat?

Car is in the shop but I want to locate a section of pipe to replace the section after the cat.

18"? Not sure on the length. I guess I could weld on 20" and cut to fit after but would like to at least the size to find a section in the scrapyard.

If you are butting it up to the rear pipe, the post cat pipe length of a stock down pipe is 14.25". That leaves a little clearance between the pipes. A dual clamp bridges the gap.

Super. I'm not sure if I should remove the little bit of pipe inside the CAT or just but it and weld.

98 Jetta TDI AHU 1.9L (944 TDI swap in progress) I moved so now i got nothing but an AHU in a garage on a pallet.
If you can weld. Just go to mandrel bending solutions and make up a new exhaust. Costs about $50 in new pipe maybe less. I did my entire 3" strait back for $85 in parts with v bands included.

I always just butt weld the pipe to the cat ...never lost one (that I know of) Probably done a couple dozen that way over the years.

And if my measurements are correct I believe it to be 55mm O.D. X 14.25" lol My local shop fixed my 2003 with a smaller diameter piece of pipe and just flared the ends to fit inside the original pipes. Since it is a metric size and not available in North America they fit this smaller pipe in and welded. I wish to locate a 55mm pipe off another VW vehicle at the scrapper and weld it on. Apparently it is a common problem.

It's close to 2 1/4" which is a common size. Just use that.

Between the cat and the part that gets clamped is usually a usable section of OEM pipe that you can use to adapt to the rear exhaust pipe/clamp. I graft this piece, be it 4-5 inches long, to a section of 2 1/4 dia pipe to make the 14 1/4 inch long section and weld that to the cat.

I think it is real handy to have a break in the exhaust where the down pipe can be separated from the rest.
