2015 Passat owners please check your oil level and report it back here .

I have a call into VW customer care. The engineers are checking into it. Previous VW's have had recalls for improper dipstick length, and of coarse the manuals have been known to be wrong.

I changed my oil at 10,000 miles and found in the manual it only holds about 4.5 quarts (4.3 liters). With this amount of oil it only shows up on very bottom of dipstick.

At about 5000 miles I checked the oil to find I had to add 3/4 qt to get it to the top of the hash marks. I checked for leaks and found none. This tells me that it was low upon delivery to the garage.

Thanks for your time.

I can't speak for VW but at Subaru the oil level is verified twice. Once before the engine is started to verify it has oil and again before the vehicle is ran on the dyno. We build the 4 cylinder in house and import the 6 bangers from Japan. But with the longshoreman that has been going on out on the west coast we have had to fly in the H6 engines dry and do the oil fills manually. I wonder if VW has done the same leading to some inconsistent oil levels. We have been having the same issues.

Same engine, but may use a different oil pan which could change total capacity. But it shouldn't be by much.

However, that significantly higher number for the Golf is suspect.

I just did my first oil change on the 2015 Passat 6M a few days ago. Added 5 liters of oil and the level only comes up to the bottom third of the crosshatched area of the dipstick.

Posted this in another thread, but it bears reposting here. As with any info, please confirm this with your dealer.

Spoke with shop foreman at Stohlman VW. He says there HAS been some conflicting info re: oil capacity between the various car models, with the same EA 288 engine.

BOTTOM LINE: OIL CAPACITY ON 2015 NMS PASSAT with the EA288 engine: 5.8quarts. This info comes from a VAG document dated Nov. 11, 2014.

As with anything posted on the internet, including this post, any 2015 owner should phone their dealer and ask for clarification.

Thanks for this important information. It gives you pause to think that the "super efficient" engineers of VW have missed something this important. If I was the CEO of VW I would have a very direct meeting with my Quality Control guy and find out who is reviewing manuals and what the flow of information is.

Hey my cousin bought a new 2015 jetta a few months ago and found out there is a dipstick recall for in correct measurements. The dealership had to over or underfill until the new dip stick came in... I'll text him tomorrow and find out his user name and tell him about this thread since he's a member here...

Any updates on the correct amount?

jimbo1mcm: Why don't you phone your dealer and ask them?

Regardless what I posted above, each owner needs to take on the responsibility of learning the information directly from their servicing dealership. Unless the information is confirmed by several (qualified VW )sources, the info itself could be considered suspect.

I guess I need to see the VAG document. Dealers make a lot of mistakes.

Just called my dealer and spoke to a tech in service. He says he just adds 4 quarts and checks the dipstick. Now I don't believe he has had any 2015's with the EA288 engine. I told him about the VAG document and he is going to check on it and get back to me tomorrow.

Dear Mr. Brady,

I tried giving you a call and I’m sorry we were unable to get in contact.

After speaking with our specialist team, I have more information regarding your CC’s oil capacity. The oil capacity is 4.2 quarts and it should not exceed 4.5 quarts. Additionally, it’s recommended to use the markings on the oil dipstick to prevent any chances of overfilling your VW with oil.

We hope you have many fun miles behind the wheel of your VW! Should you have any other questions or concerns in the future, please feel welcome to email me back or give us a call at 800-822-8987.

Best,

Hello Mr. Brady,

I apologize; my last email should have said Passat, not CC.

Edit: second post clears things up!

This is completely ridiculous.
I'll phone the dealership that gave me the info from the Nov. 11, 2014 VWoA document. He offered to email it to me, but I refused.

I did e-mail him a copy of your post about the error. I also e-mailed him that if it is true they need to recall the dipstick as it is to short.

Exactly. All the warnings about over filling the oil and damage to the cat Makes me nervous about topping it off

Interesting Thread. I just took delivery of my 2015 on Saturday (4/4/15). My oil level is around 3/4 of the hashed area on the dip stick.

My owner's manual states that the oil capacity of the 2.0L diesel engine is 5.8 qts (5.5L).

2015 NMS PASSAT TDI owners need to SCREAM at their dealers about this. It's becoming clear that there are owner's manuals (early) that are incorrect. (The misinformation is probably exacerbated by people reading the GAS oil capacity and not the TDI oil capacity.)

Whether or not this is a dipstick length problem still needs to be determined.

My 2015 Passat TDI SEL Premium, with DPF, purchased in January 2015, shows 4.5 quarts as the oil capacity in the owner's manual.

Just spoke with SA friend at StohlmanVW, Vienna, VA.

He spent several minutes going over various documents re: oil capacity on 2015 TDIs. His conclusion: THE 2015 NMS PASSAT TDI oil capacity is 4.5qts.

The ONLY engine he saw listed as 5.8 qts is the TSI engine, NOT the TDI engine.

The dipstick issue referenced elsewhere isn't related to the Passat, it was a Jetta/Golf issue.

He's convinced the info I received from the shop foreman was incorrect, as he must have read the TSI capacity.

EACH OF YOU MUST VERIFY ALL OF THIS FOR YOURSELF.

Yes, on page 303 of the Owner's Manual published 11/2014 (vehicle build date 1/2015) clearly states in the Engine Oil Capacities (with filter) as ~5.8 quarts (5.5 liters).

Very odd that we are seeing different info for the same model year vehicle. I thought the 5.8qts was a little high based on the 2003 1,9TDI's I have owned.

I'll have to do a screen shot later, but yes.

Actually (and strangely), it states the same quantity for all three of their engines (the 1.8, 3.6, and 2.0 Diesel).

Something doesn't seem right with my manual. I can't believe all three engines would have the same capacities. Plus, their sales website refers to the capacity as 4.2Qts.

mo_jt: Better yet, when time permits, take it to your dealer and show it to them. Ask THEM the question!
This just shouldn't be happening...
