I had a problem with hesitation and surging.
I thought it was a clogged intake.
My mechanic found the air intake oil soaked(and apparently sucking in air?)after thinking about this doesnt the air intake intake air? or is it a closed system. He replaced it but didnt have time to find the leak. Now it drives much better.

I found Im low on power sterring fluid.

QUESTION: what type of fluid do we need for the TDI?
will have to look for the leak later.
Thanks, Alan

Alan, was the air filter oil-soaked or does he mean the intake at the manifold, near the EGR?

The power steering fluid is "special", of course! Search on Pentosin 11S

I figured it was a special fluid. Quess i'll have to get some from dealer.
I didnt check air-filter, What was oil-soaked and broken, was the (air/ looks like 2 or 2 1/2 diameter) tubing right behind the passenger side headlight.
If that was leaking would it cause the smoking and hesitation/surging?
