They offered a reasonable price ($1800 plus $300 round trip shipping) and the best warrantee I found anywhere: 2 years, unlimited miles. Beats VW's 1 year 12,000 miles for $3500 plus install...
Paid the local Subaru specialist (and friends) about $500 for install; 6 hrs shop rate.

First impressions:
When it is cold the shift from 1-2 lurches but when it is warm this glitch goes away.
When ya tromp on it to kick down from 4-3 the same lurch.

Zero other issues, but then I've only gone about 50 miles on it.

Leaving next week for a cross country trip of about 5,000 miles... Here's me keeping my fingers crossed.

Anybody got ideas on how to make Uncle Lurch go away?

Recode the transmission to 00011?

My wife's auto(01M) gasser was shifting really funny. Turns out it's the DSP. Dip Sh!t Program. Turned it off and the car drives much much much better.

I am rather sure that this company is simply a salvage yard. I bought my leather interior for my 98 NB from them. I wonder how many miles are on the tranny you installed? Did you get a new filter? Did the suburu shop know how to properly fill the fluid level in the trans, and use the correct fluid? The lurch is not good and will lead to early failure of the 01M you've installed - and it could be due to improper fluid level. You need VCDS to properly fill the trans.

They DO sell used transmissions and parts but also rebuild things.
What their site sez:
Our transmissions are remanufactured using the latest engineering updates.
24 month parts and labor warranty. Thats right parts AND labor.
We use NEW oem or better parts for our transmissions. No corners cut here.
Remanufactured Torque converter is included with all reman transmissions.
ASE certified technicians build each unit by hand, not an assembly line where quality is lost.
Each unit is pre tested on our Axi Line dyno to simulate driving loads, no trans leaves untested.
Most units come with fluid which saves our customers money
Same transmissions as the dealerships but better warranty, price and quality.
In Stock - Ready to be built to your specifications!
Here's hoping I don't need to use their warranty.

It kinda feels like the TC doesn't unlock before it shifts from 4-3..

update

My results so far:

Away I went on a 5000 mile trek back east

The car dropped into a false neutral a couple of times at highway speeds, a bit unnerving to say the least. When I got to Vermont I took it to a recommended mechanic (Bruce King's in Sheldon) and asked him to do a once over and check the tranny fluid level: He found that it needed a quart and that made the false neutral problem disappear, and it hasn't reappeared yet.

The lurching shifts have disappeared, and I've tried to make 'em happen. Just a bit of break-in needed, I suppose.

On the last leg of the trip home, started out in Laramie, WY. Out of the hotel, hit the fuel depot a couple hundred yards away and filled up. Got on the highway and damned if the transmission wouldn't shift into 4th gear and the CEL was on... Pulled off, plugged in the OBD-II scan tool (everybody carries a scan tool, RIGHT?) and read the codes:
P0758: Shift Solenoid B Circuit Electrical
Freeze Frame Data:
Engine speed: 930RPM
Load Value: 0%
Coolant Temp: 51*F
Vehicle Speed: 19MPH
Cleared the codes, continued on my merry way with no issues.

I'll be keeping a close eye on it with the thought of using the 2 year warranty (labor included) but so far I'm fairly happy with what Auto Sports Unlimited has provided. I think that had I used an installer who was more familiar with (and had the computer tools for) VW's these issues wouldn't have been issues; the fluid level and resetting the ECU does take a certain amount of finesse besides mechanic ability.
