Does the brake drag? Is the piston boot in good shape? Does it leak? Does the e brake lever return up after you press it down?

They tend to freeze up along with the sliding pins, but sometimes that can be fixed. If the bleed screws don't loosen then the caliper may have to be changed.

Yes, you want to make sure the pins on the carrier are free too, the carrier is a separate part.

Not 100% positive but I believe the rear pistons on the TDI's need to turn and press at the same time. Just a heads up!

Not much for testing those things. You'll get some idea if it compresses smoothly, has no damage.

2001 golf tdi 4 door auto now a manual, mine, 2000 golf 2 door M/T son's,daughters 98 NB non-TDI 2.0, 2003 TDI NB for next daughter, head repaired and on road,gluten for punishment got another tdi 2001NB,another yellow tdi NB
As stated above, no damaged boot, bleeder screw comes out and piston retracts smoothly and ebrake retracts back ......good to go.
