Noise at 1600rpms

I have a 2006 DSG Jetta TDI with 182000 miles.
There is a humming noise at approximately 1600 rpms in every gear and is annoying at 58mph. Hum is present accelerating; decelerating; and at constant speed.
Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Do you have an aftermarket cheapo solid drive axle shaft on the passenger side?
The original ones are a tubular design about 1 3/4" in diameter.

I had both CVaxles replaced and then I heard the hum.
My Mechanic replaced one buggered up new cv axle but hum still exists. He then hooked up some listening devices and assured me hum is NOT coming from CV axles but transmission.
Would a solid drive axle shaft resonate in transmission area?
I am not sure what type of CV axle was installed.
