so, a B4 was produced before 1997 and looks like the first picture (doesn't have to be a wagon - TDI available 96 and 97) and the B5 has run 1997 through the present (but I think there was a minor makeover sone some time in the past few years that made a B5.5 designation). The B6 is due some time in the near(ish?) future. This is according to the forum descriptions at the vwvortex.
I don't know the differences in features. Color is probably one of them.

J, that's a B5.5, not a B5
We have diesel B5.5 cars in NAmerica. we were never privileged enough to have B5 diesels....except for Eric.

So, visually how do you know? B5/B5.5
There are two different tail light housings I notice on the road - is that one of the visual changes? Can you tell by the shape of the body?

the body is basically the same...the headlights, tail lights and the chrome on the grille are a dead giveaway.
There were no B5 diesels (except for the two stray cars that slipped thru and Eric's) imported to the US so you'd be looking at the V6 or the 1.8T.
