No bleeding tools needed as this is for the A5 model cars only. They self prime with a turn of the key. Check the forum you are posting to.

DOH! I swear this was in the Mark 4 area... I only lurk there. Did it get moved? Bizzare.

I am new to this forum and saw this thread. I took a road trip on my 2005 VW Jetta TDI (currently at 177K miles) last summer and was not in a hurry so I went 55 mph the whole way. I ended up with 973 miles. I think I can crack it at 1000 miles but will need to do another long road trip where I'm not in such in a hurry.

I drive 95% highway to work and back. My best tank was 1318.6KM. This is 819.34 Miles without any mods. Just smart driving. Cant wait to chip and muffler/cat delete and try again. This was with a K&N filter however (big no no according to people here). I've since switched to an OEM approved filter and see less milage but I also blame the cold weather.

Heres a picture.

Edit: 2003 Jetta TDI PD130 5spd Manual. Maybe 6sp swap one day for even higher highway mileage. Also figured I'd chime in from a mk4 driver.

Fuel Economy: Typically between 53 and 57 MPG per tank

Reviving an old thread here.

First, I have not driven beyond 800 miles on a single tank of diesel again with my 2005.5 Jetta A5 TDI since some time before my last post to this thread on 1 Feb 2011.

Second, since then my commute changed slightly. Now it is longer and with less traffic congestion. My car has been averaging a fairly consistent 53 to 57 MPG per tank during the last 12 months (using the trip odometer and a spreadsheet to track thing). Nearly each tank gets me past the 700 mile mark on the trip odometer, and I might be able to drive more than 800 miles on a tank again. I have come close to it several times but filled up a little too soon in order to use either my two favorite stations and avoid either buying diesel at a different station or worse, running the tank dry (which I have never done in my 35 years of driving). Here are my close calls to going beyond the 800 mile mark since my last post to this thread:
  • 794.9 miles, 21 Sep 2010, 62205 miles on the odometer
  • 788.7 miles, 9 Oct 2010, 62994 miles on the odometer
  • 772.9 miles, 13 Oct 2011, 74754 miles on the odometer
  • 770.2 miles, 16 Apr 2012, 80060 miles on the odometer
  • 795.1 miles, 17 Aug 2012, 84797 miles on the odometer
  • 787.5 miles, 25 Oct 2012, 86296 miles on the odometer
  • 794.8 miles, 2 Aug 2013, 93474 miles on the odometer
  • 797.9 miles, 6 May 2014, 103824 miles on the odometer
Hopefully some time in the next 4 months I'll be reporting that I will have gone beyond 800 miles on a single tank of diesel with this car again...!

I live in the SF Bay Area and getting 800 miles on a tank is virtually impossible. Driving under 60 for a sustained period is next to impossible unless you like someone on your a$$ all the time. So, I'll never be there.

I'm with you there. I'm in the Chicago area and almost all of my mileage is city (stop and go) driving. I don't take enough road trips to get the opportunity to have a long highway trip either. I have made it into the 700 mile club with Graycie on several occasions but have never gotten close to that magic 800 number. Liath has made the 800 club, but since she's an A4 she doesn't qualify for this thread. I guess I'll just have to be happy that I'm getting 39.7mpg as a lifetime average with Graycie. That's not bad considering that 80-90% of those miles are around town driving and the vehicle that Graycie replaced ("Miss Blue" 1987 Vanagon GL) only got 17.99mpg as a lifetime average.

I'm glad this thread was revived. I've been wondering if this would be possible in my '10 Jetta with a manual transmission.

I just finished a tank of gas that was 99% highway and averaged 52.09 MPG. It ended up being 754.3 miles on 14.48 gallons. This was all done in one day with just about 3 or 4 stops to use the restroom or get food.

I maintained exactly 63 MPH for the entire time on the highway.

It's worth mentioning that I had a hitch mount bike rack on my car earlier on this road trip and I only averaged 47 MPG on that tank. For the return leg, I put the bike and rack in the car and averaged 52 MPG.

Someday, I aspire to reach 800. I think I'd have to get rid of my luggage and bicycle first.
