Then why do they work acceptably (?) for a while? Anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, and then, usually in my experience, the WiFi module becomes unreliable...

So what should I buy as a replacement? It's no fun driving a couple of hours each way to my in-laws to set up yet another unit...

Heat. They lack active cooling so after time, they die.

I find TP-Link units to be a good mid-range type. They support a lot of high-end features for a good price.

Page loads are very very slow today... slower than they normally are for me at work. Normal page loads take 5-10 seconds for me, but today it's more like 25 seconds.

Pages are loading in about a second for me here...The closest I've come to nailing this down is either ISP or DNS issues. It is not the TDIClub server.

When I ping forums.tdiclub.com I am told the IP address is 65.110.12.166.

I started an endless ping and let it run for a while, it was very steady at 89ms-91ms:

Fred/Derf,

If you haven't gotten with Roishe Cheng on his/her offer of assistance I'd suggest it. I work for Brighthouse (my local ISP) and 24/7/365 it takes ~6 seconds to load every single page from the forums, both from home and at work. The reason I'd have to say it's server related is that the pings and traceroutes are clean, and pics and store pages load for me flawlessly. So it's something having to do with the forum.

I saw some posts from you earlier in this thread suggesting a growth in users. Right now I show 3360 (493 members and 2867 guests) which is somewhere around the numbers you posted before your server upgrade, so either there was another increase in users, or there's something funky with how the server is handling forum pages compared to other pages.

Can you tell the server to prioritize serving forum pages over pics/store pages? If so that might be all that's needed, depending on how many requests you're getting for those other subdomains.

I'd love to offer more assistance but I'm a network engineer, not a server admin. If you're needing to upgrade the servers again I'd suggest and support a fundraising drive.

Maybe it's a FL thing. I've been visiting this site for over 6 months now and it is (and has always been) by far the slowest website I go to. On a good day it rivals dial-up. Either at work or at home. The only thing that seems normal is when I hit the back button. Definitely as Server thing. Lot's of data that is probably not accessed efficiently.
I have a 10mb dsl connection at home. No idea what the speed at work is.
Numbers are one thing, but perception is everything.
I visit mostly the forum and the site that loads slowly is forums.tdiclub.com. If it isn't cached it takes at least 5 seconds which is an eternity when wanting to move around quickly. "At least" means the fastest. It's so slow at times I think the website has frozen.

I took just 35 seconds to refresh this page and 5 seconds for the "edit" window to open.

Yes, but only for those that have speed issues at some point. This can help determine if the issue is the server or something between the member and the server as this tests from a different location.

Over the past week or so the site is much slower for me than it has been in the past. I initially thought it was my cable provider but it's very slow both at home and at work. Is anything going on that's causing this?

For a while there have been reports of TDIClub being slow to respond. While there might be a few times for maintenance reasons this could happen, it should be infrequent. Also I have been unable to replicate these issues as the forums are pretty much always snappy no matter why kind of computer and connection I have and the number of people experiencing this issues seems to be low. Due to this I believe the problem is external, but I need a little more information to help track down the problem and find the root cause.
To help isolate the issues if you could answer the poll question and answer the following questions for each internet provider/location you access the forums it would be a great assistance. Please post the results below or send me a PM (VW Derf). When I have enough answers I will note at the bottom of this thread and close the topic.

I'm still getting sporadic hangs when loading pages and the site is generally higher latency than normal.

Yup, slow for me too. Forums opened to a blank page and it took over a minute to load. Did a speed test and I'm over 10 Mb/sec on a Clear Wireless modem. Everything else loads fine.

Yes, on May 28, 2015 we had a 10+ fold increase in the number of non logged in users severely impacting services. Things are now back to normal.

I can't imagine that they're legitimate viewers at that time of day. The peak is listed as: Most users ever online was 36,729, 05-29-15 at 06:08 AM.

6 am eastern time, but an order of magnitude spike it traffic is likely artificial. It'd be cool is it were something like /. though I cannot remember the last time that happened to a normal server.
