Can anyone tell me where the glow plug relay is located on a 97 passat ? I am having a hard time finding it. Thanks

Someone else will chime in, but I believe the relay is actually under the hood, unlike the Jetta of the same vintage. Pop the hood, and look at the top of the firewall in front of the driver. You should see a plastic flip cover with a thin metal (fuse) under it held on each end by a screw. That whole unit is the glowplug relay.

Should be between the battery and the washer fluid bottle. You should see the plastic housed fuse and the metal strip fuse under the clear plastic cover.
The relay for the coolant glow plugs is on the firewall, next to the master cylinder, IIRC. It will have some red wires coming off of the bottom, and another strip fuse under the clear plastic cover. It probably has some heat distortion to the plastic around the right hand terminal. This is not good, but kind of normal. That relay is probably still fine, but make sure the connection is good. This seems to be good advice in general. So, make sure the connection is good, the screw is tight and there is no corrosion[/i] and you shouldn't have trouble with that one.

The cylinder glow plug relay is inside the car way above the fuse box. Next to it is a large 80 amp fuse. I had to remove the fuse box to reach it. It is actually attached to what appears to be the bottom of the top of the dash. I broke the clip that held it there whenever I removed mine. Here are a couple of images of it.

P.S. Here is a previous thread about this.
