To add to that, I filled my car to brim on Monday at lunch and then parked at work about 1/4 mile away. I then topped off after work, just to see what would happen. I was able to get in 0.3 gallon after the 1/2 mile driven w/ two startups.

I have to agree that the diesel expansion worry is overblown.

Well, last tank. 920 miles on 15 gallons even. 62.33 mpg. ZERO engine off anything. Zero coasting. Normal driving. Ive got to try some of your wierdo techniques and see what I get.:D

__. Yeah, OB, I just got two tanks into the 60's (first with this '03 wagon). No wierdo techniques for me, either. But I did have a .658 5th gear put in my car in June. It sure is nice.

This is a pretty odd tank and turned out to be kind of disappointing considering that the reprogam should improve FE. Many things have changed since the last 1100+ tank: Unitronic 1+ reprogram, panzer plate, front tires now are Michelin Hydroedge @ 44 psi instead of Michelin Pilot @ 51 psi and oil change was a 5w40 (502.00-505.01).

The car runs better and I find difficult to stay way from the go pedal. Also, I need to go back to the 5W30 low viscosity oil I was using. Hopefully the ECU file will be fine tunned soon and also I will play a bit with the idle speed.

Most of the tank were highway miles (say 90%) and using P&G from 50 to 60 mph (70%) and some from 43 to 55 mph (30%), both using 5th gear.

Wow - good work (again). I think I've missed the high MPG opportunities for the year here - starting to turn cool. Might have one tank left before the cold starts really start to take effect. At least the tune has not lost you any MPG's.

Not much activity on this thread recently, but now that summer fuel is here, I expect that will change.

I'm still trying and have made 73.5 for 300 miles, and 75.6 for 200, but so far that 1200 mile tank has eluded me.

Was it ever decided to change the rules (i.e. 500 miles @ 70 mpg or 600 miles on the first half tank, etc.)? I know there was some discussion last fall about changing the qualifications for one of FIX's stickers.

I'd like to get a 1200 mile tank anyway, so I'll just keep trying !

I don't think a decision was made. My opinion is that your fillup should be >10 gallons and preferably at the same location as the initial fill. This keeps it a large enough number of gallons that measurement errors are minimized and you didn't coast down the rockies (like VW's mileage contest), but dosen't force you to go 1200 miles to make it crediable (which I'll be the first to admit is daunting).

Summer Challenge

Hey Fix, what about a 200 mile round trip 77 mpg minimum challenge.
To enter you have to already got 70 mpg/1200 mile tank.
Just for fun, no other rules.

200 Mile Challenge

Hey N.O.O.C.:

Do we have to re-fuel at the same station (i.e. run a loop rather than a straight line)?

We know Ernie can do around 90 if he can straight line it. and I think I can get around 80 coming down I-77 (with a North Wind blowing)

Running a loop would be ideal to avoid tailwinds and endless powerless downhill glides.

That's only about 2.5 gallons, but is doable in a half day or so which makes it appealing. I might have a couple ~100 mile trips to make alone later in June that I could make an attempt at it.

I can tell you right now that I won't be competitive at all - Need to make some changes on my car just to get back to where I used to be, not to mention improve upon it. I've still got a few ideas up my sleeve though :)

BioBob - I think that filling at the same location is a pretty significant factor because it minimizes so many variables (elevation, fill up variances are minimized, winds are minimized, etc). I think if you were to make it to 1100/1200 miles though the fill location becomes less of a factor, but on something as short at NooC has proposed, measurement variables become much more significant.

I just did 1088.6 miles on my last tank. I Think that with a little more slow down I can get a 1100 mile tank out of my B4. This would require a smooth 56+ mpg driving at about 55 mph. I'll post back in 3 weeks when I fill up!

Looks like few people are trying to achieve status in this thread. Well I'm happy to put my name on the 1100 mile list with 1100.4 miles and 19.25 gallons!

ho do you guys get so many mpg's the best i can get is 38 mpg what is wrong?
Just an educated guess, you have a 2009 or 2010 TDI. Thus low mileage and heavy emission equipement. As so I. If you will notice the people getting huge MPG have dirty diesel older TDIs. It seems that the clean diesel TDIs get less mpg.

You are correct here. The 2009 and 2010 will not get you as good MPG as the dirty older diesels. In normal highway driving which is 65-75 mph your lucky to get 45 mpg. If you drive like granny going 45-55mph yes you might get over 50 mpg but unless you have an older Jetta TDI anything else is just plain BS.

I'm lucky if I could get 600 to a full tank

B5, Jammed Turbo Vanes, Boost Leak, Clogged Manifold and Faulty MAF I'm guessing :D

Can't get the VNT to move under 30 inch of vacuum so the vanes are well and truly stuck cos it cycles fine with vag-com lol

Cars hibernating until January now. I'll fix it when it's warmer :)

I wanna do this too! How do I get this kind of mileage? I'm hypermiling and coasting all over the place. I'm not sure I can do much better unless I dump the spare and loose about 20 lbs of body fat....lol! What to do? Does running on B20 REALLY make a difference?

Bumping thread. It's a good one and it's a pity to have it fade in memory.

Well today I joined the ranks ...... got my first ever 70.79 mpg tank. 716.4 miles filled diesel up into filler neck to run out point with 10.02 gallons. I simply couldn't believe it :D . Did this on my daily commute to work. I recently tweeked my timing via vagcom in adaption to 4.5 advanced and it seems to have pushed me over the edge. :)
