Well my 2000 Jetta has only 134,000 miles on it. But I had to chime in - I drove a 300 D Benz many years ago that had 998,000 miles on the original engine. Don't know what work he did to the car but it blew me away. It drove like any other 300 D I ever drove.

340K+ Miles on my '97 B4

NO issues other than the usual (109 Relay, door hardware, etc.), and the injector pump seal leaks that swept the TDI world this past year (ULSD fuel). Still on original clutch! Started out on regular Mobile 1, but after finding this forum I switched to Rotella. Kudoa to Robbie and "aNUT" at Runonbeer.com (Austin), and Masha at Motor Techtonics (Converse/San Antonio), for helping me keep the B4 beastie on the road!

I really applaud the TDI's that make it past 300K, mine is not going to make it much past that :( (seems that an oil ring broke/lots of blowby).
I do believe in the VW good luck charm though, 300K here we come :) !

(1Z is tired, AHU anyone...?)

It's been chipped/modded most of that time.

Extremely reliable with the exception of needing a new clutch around 200k and having to replace the power window regulators on a regular basis. All major components are still original and untouched.

The stock clutch couldn't handle the extra power during our lovely Illinois winter and began slipping. Not too shabby considering about a 50% bump over stock power output.

And the window regulators have been a VW thorn until relatively recently. I have the R&R down to about 15 minutes now including removing the door panel and moving the window motor over to the new regulator assy.
Since ULSD came out have you been adding motor oil to your fuel tank? I heard that it is important to do so. I'm a little nervous about adding ATF to my fuel tank.

Well, I'm up to almost 590,000km now.
Still on the original clutch, alternator, starter, turbo......head's never been off the engine either. Changed the manual tranny at around 450,000km. My own fault, I never changed the fluid; the bearings became noisy.

Best damn car I've ever owned. Period.

I have 170,000 on a 2003 jetta wagon. It's running good but my mpg has dropped below 40. It started when the dealership screwed up on my timing belt and I had another shop repair the valves. other than that all is well.

In my opinion, 70mph in a beetle (brick), 44 to 46mpg is right where you are supposed to be. Is it an automatic? If so then you are doing very well.

Philip, try slowing down to 65, check your tire pressure, and wait until summer. Winter diesel always gives lower #s...

Is there any VW TDi out there that has 500,000 miles on the original engine?

My best was a hand-me-down '79 Rabbit. My parent's bought it brand new in 1979. 2-Door, Yellow, 5-Speed, Black Leatherette. No mods, no rebuilds, just oil changes, brakes, couple of mufflers, tires, battery or two or three, couple of starters, some bondo (funny story, the car never started on its own. We always parked it on a hill and popped the clutch to start her. Well, my Dad was doing the push and jump in the car to pop the clutch and he missed and the car ran down into our meadow and side-swipped a tree! Best part about it was my Dad running after the car yelling "STOP!" Classic family story!)
Only got rid of this car due to failing PA inspection in '97. It was my first car and my Dad was riding with me when it rolled to 200K. Besides those normal maintaince items, nothing was ever done to the car...heck, even the clutch was original!! Car had 260,000 on her when we bid it goodbye...

Now, three diesels later I have a new 2006.5 Jetta TDI. Had only 6 months, already have 15,000 miles on her...not even close to being broken in!

Is it true that these engines are not able to go 500,000 miles? I know the Benz diesels go that long.

There are some out there that have over 500,000 miles on them with no rebuild...I am convinced my '79 could have gone 500,000, even when it failed inspection the mechanic said the engine was very strong and good for many more miles...

yes 408k now. oil i have used is mobil 1 synthetic with mann/hastings filters. looks like i am going to need a pump soon since i cannot get the iq to adjust and it stumbles coming up to an intersection or idleing then goes away. even the interior still looks good.

When I bought my '01 Jetta TDI in 2005 (100000km) there was one that was traded in that was an '01 also and it had 890000km (556250 miles). The guy was a courier that basically drove the car 10 hours a day on the highway for 4 years.

kleinert: Call Diesel Injection Srvices in Portland, Oregon
They will put your IP back where it belongs and maybe save you some $ while doing it, otherwise about $7-800 USD is the proper amount that hese pumps go for.

Good luck making 500K(as in miles), mine has very close to 490k's (as in kilometers ;)).

Sorry I don't have the phone, I am far away at present on another vacation...
