An IP install is basically like doing a timing belt + the IP metal lines. You lock the cam and crank and then remove the timing belt.

Does the pump's crank have to be in any particular position when putting it in, or just look at how the current one is and put it in the same?
I do my own timing belt changes, have metalnerd tools, so that part is not a problem.

pin the IP, lock the cam, lock the crank (or be sure it stays at TDC when you tension the belt
I've only done this once, but I think it would difficult to just slip the belt back where it was without the lock-down.

Of course you'd lock the cam and IP down when installing the timing belt. I don't see a need to do it before that point but it won't hurt anything.
