All the stations in Hastings, Minnesota, have diesel for $2.949. One Exxon in New Brighton, MN, charges $2.979. Almost every other station in or near the Twin Cities is $3.09-3.19, and there only a few that are higher than that.

Here on the lower left coast's capital our high turnover Chevron - near the railyards where UP's HiRail diesel work trucks fuel - 3.89/gallon

I went to grade school, high school and six years of college here.

The rest of this nation has it right.

$2.49 in Katy, Texas (30 mi west of Houston)
That has got to be a mistake, as it is barely above the price for the nearby futures contract (about $2.25). Then state and federal taxes must be added, plus cost of delivery to the station and at least a few cents/gallon of profit. That station must lose at least 20-25 cents on every gallon it sells.

At the local Speedway, we have RUG at $2.69, premium at $3.21 and diesel at $3.29. I haven't seen diesel above premium around here in a long time.

Still a few stations charging $2.999, but most are $3.149-3.299. Some are $3.399 but I haven't seen any charging more than that.

WTI and Brent crude oil futures are both down about $9/barrel since early October. So diesel at the pump ought to drop 15 cents or more in the near future, if it hasn't already where you live.

Here in northeast Wisconsin, regular unleaded at several stations is at $2.599, with diesel at $3.389 (diesel prices also now above premium unleaded). So diesel prices are currently $0.79 higher than regular unleaded, or 30.4% higher. I've always had the belief that diesel engines are about 30% more efficient than gasoline engines of the same displacement. That means there is no more financial benefit of running a diesel engine.

We were in Scotland & Ireland a few months ago. There the opposite situation exists - diesel prices are lower than regular unleaded. Of course there, all fuel prices exceed those in the US. But diesel still less expensive that regular unleaded. They also have cool winters and use oil for heating more than in the US, so with cooler weather, one would think diesel prices would go up faster than regular gasoline (as they seem to here in the US), but they don't that much.

So what has happened in the US causing diesel prices to be higher than regular unleaded? Years ago in the US, diesel was always lower than regular unleaded, just as it was in Europe. Why did prices flip/flop in the US?

There has been, for at least the last decade and probably much longer, a seasonal pattern to the relationship between gasoline and diesel. Diesel tends to be relatively high from September until January or February; then the premium shrinks or disappears gradually until May or June.

In part, this is because demand for both gasoline and diesel vary at different times of the year. Diesel goes up in the fall because crop harvesting and transporting equipment uses lots of fuel, at the same time as a million more school buses take to the roads, and because those who still use heating oil tend to stock up in the fall.

Other factors are the regulatory requirements for summer- and winter-blend gasoline. Gasoline prices rise in the spring in anticipation of the switch to summer gasoline in April -- and then drop in September when stations are allowed to sell all the winter-blend gasoline that was left over from the previous spring.

That's not all. Gasoline-powered cars are using less fuel, and some cars use little or none. Refineries have to be reconfigured to produce less gasoline and more diesel from each barrel of oil, but this takes time and money. Changing the output percentages by just a couple points isn't too hard, but shifting from a 60-30 ratio to a 45-45 ratio is difficult.
