2000 automatic tdi with bad transmission?

1998 jetta TDI 5 speed
i was thinking about buying a 2000 jetta TDI with 208k miles that is an automatic, transmission is bad


my question is if i did buy this car, would i be stupid to put an automatic back in it? (i've read nothing positive about the automatics in these cars if i remember right)

You are right auto no very good and not cheap.You can swap it out for a 5 or 6 speed trans at a cost around 1500 to 3000.FYI if you buy the car get the T/B replace with aT/B kit it has every thing you need to do the job right and also get a skid plate.Good luck

Plan on spending a lot of money getting it back up and running properly.

In my opinion the trannys were/are bad even when NEW.:rolleyes:
