This happened to me! 2013 Passat TDI dead stop at 70MPH. Tow to dealer HPFP failure w/metal shavings throughout. Under extended warranty but need to send a fuel sample to VW of America in Michigan. They ran a Specific Gravity Test and told me I failed. Had it towed to a second dealer I trust, in my neighborhood, and asked for a fuel sample to have independently tested. Second dealer said I failed the Specific Gravity Test and gave me a picture of a guy holding a Petro Dector, and said I failed that test as well. The meter had a fronzy face on it??? Ya, Fronzy means you fail.
I sent a sample of my fuel to FOI Labs in Vancouver and it came back as 100% pure B10 diesel. They test for water, gas and bio blend additives. PROBLEM: As I learn more, (Ethan M. of the TDI Club) the problem is that my car was designed to run on ULSD Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel B # 2. The best I can find in my State of Illinois is Bio #10. Some pumps are as high as Bio # 20.
I'm wondering if I should even fix this car. In hind sight I should have sold it back last year when I had the chance to return under the Emission Scandal program.

dang. if your local shops only have the B10 and B20, how are you supposed to get back down to the B2?

How many times are we going to have to see the same post repeated? Posting once should be sufficient, no?

VW signed off on Ill using B20 with reduced OCI but the issue with any Bio diesel is the amount of water that it can hold compared to D2, it's much much higher. So it may not be bio % but the water % they tested.

I'd go back to where ever you bought the fuel from and start the lawyer talk with them.

He already sent a fuel sample to an actual lab (not a glorified speak and spell testing apparatus) and they found no contaminates. The lawyers need to be talking with VW, not the fuel station.

I saw the sample report as well. It was all normal except there was 10% Biodiesel.

FWIW, in Chicongoland, you'd better have the fuel tested yourself independently because stealerships can be total crooks about it, knowing the state is mostly B11-B20 at just about every single diesel pump. Both MB and BMW allow up to 5% bio, with VW/Audi allowing for up to 20%.

Same thing happened to me with the GLK250 and while my insurance covered it completely, it cost $15K for new injectors, new HPFP pump, new lines and sensors, even new tank (they said) which is the MB prescribed repair. I probably could've just replaced the HPFP since any shavings made as it detonated would've stopped in the fuel filter. The truck was running fine, btw, just a CEL on for fuel rail pressure.

I didn't trust that stealership from the beginning, and I'm pretty sure they either (a) misfueled it themselves with gasoline, since I brought it in at less than 1/4 tank and they added some fuel before driving it around to diagnose it, or (b) they more likely just pulled a fuel sample from another car. I didn't have the time or the wherewithal to take it to another shop or get a fuel sample myself (we had just bought it 2 weeks prior), but I've never had a misfueling issue in my 28+ years of driving, including one year in an OTR 18-wheeler.

Bottom line: in the $hithole of Chicongo, many dealers are simply crooks and diesel owners end up getting the shaft. If your insurance company covers it, that's an option. If they don't, and VW doesn't honor the warranty covering up to B20, you'll probably have to invoke legal counsel and get the fueling station involved as well. Sorry for your trouble. Good luck, you'll need it.
