I went skiing last week in Italy.
From Brussels to the skiresort was about 1050km/653miles.
I did it in 10hrs30min (my mate had a flat tyre) and came back in 10 hrs.
We drove trough Belgium & Luxembourg(speed limit 120 kmh/75mph) then trough Germany (600 km/370 miles :no speed limits on the autobahn) and trough Austria (speed limit 130 kmh/81mph).

It was night and it rained all the time.
In Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Italy I drove about 15 kmh/10mph above the allowed speed (on the speedometer) and in Germany I drove between 140kmh and 170kmh (87mph - 106mph).

I drive a tuned (by oettinger from 90 to 129 hp) Seat toledo tdi '97 (similar to the former vento/jetta) with three persons and a lot of luggage on stock rim winter tyres. My car has about 177.000 km/110.000 miles.
My mate followed me in his lowered '96 golf stationwagon tdi 90 HP (tuned by Upsolute) with low profile tyres and two persons and a lot of skis onboard. He has 120.000 km/75.000 miles.

I averaged
5.5 l/100 km
43 US mpg

My mate averaged
5.8 l/100 km
40.5 US mpg

What do you guys think about this ??
Does this seem low or high fuel consumption ?

PS. You should also consider the difference in driving between Europe (especially Germany, where I was passed several times by cars doing over 200 kmh/125 mph) and the USA.
