If I replace a glow plug that is making the engine light on the dashboard and the emissions workshop light come on, when will the lights go out? I do not currently have a code reader to erase the code.

Previous models used to reset after 50 successful cold starts and full warm-up cycles.
You might wish to see if your local auto parts store has a free scan service with a generic code reader. Or even a tool rental of a scanner might be quicker and cheaper than making an appointment at a garage or dealer, or waiting a month of driving.

The ceramic glow plugs have been replaced by steel glow plugs. The older ceramic plugs may or may not be available.

You can't just replace one ceramic plug with a steel one. You must replace the complete set. The ECU then needs to be reflashed to accommodate the steel plugs. Failure to do so will likely lead to quick failure of your replacement steel pugs.
