A trip that short means absolutely nothing really. But congrats on it anyway. Report back what your full tank averages are when you get some. I would bet on my tdi I could get some insane number going 40 miles at 60 mph all highway.

I had a small trip today that was all highway, and on the way to my destination I had a pretty nice tailwind and the road was mostly downslope... I managed to get a consumption of 5.4 L/100km (43.5MPG)... with A/C running too,

Small trip. Downhill. Tailwind. Fuel use shows small consumption..................

But you don't show your engine size. Small could be 1.4, 1.8 et al.

Just to summarize the points being made:

The TSI is a very efficient engine. The TDI is more efficient than the TSI.

I have both. The best full tank in my MK7 GTI is 35.8 mpg while the best in my Mk7 TDI is 62.6 mpg. If I drove the GTI as easy as I did the TDI, it could maybe get 40 mpg, but never ever anywhere near 60 mpg.

I got 46.4mpg tank on a 2001 Camry on an empty highway averaging 49mph. Look up "hypermiling" and you will see many people do 40-50mpg on a standard 2 liter gas engine. Yes, gas engines can approach TDI mpgs if you drive it right. Nothing really special about that.
My best tank on a TDI is 67mpg

If both are driven (hypermiling) the gas engined car shouldn't approach the tdi. Your example above shows this with 46.4 vs 67 mpg. Not even close.

I got slightly above 50% over epa estimate on both cars. I usually get 35-40% over most tanks. 2.0 Tdi vs 2.2 gas, the diesel will always win, no doubt. My point was to OP that 40s in a gas engine is not remarkable. If OP got 50s-60s in a TSI, that would be impressive. There are hypermilers who get 50s in a plain accord.
Btw, empty 2 lane highway where I see a car every 10-15 minutes zoom past me. I never sacrifice safety for mpgs. Never worth it

I read a thread on vortex where golf sportwagen 4motion drivers are getting some really fantastic MPG's and have slightly larger tanks than the TDI's too. The 1.8L EA888 engine is a good one for power and efficiency.

The whole thing I love about a TDI is I can drive it any way I want and still get fantastic mpg. I’ve just never been a hyper miler. I’m not patient enough to drive that way.

Took a 60 mile highway trip to Mass for work today, MFD of the 1.8t Alltrack said 38.2 when I pulled into the parking lot, sadly the tank average is still showing 30.7mpg, it climbed from 29.5. I was driving in the slow lane letting those who want cut in front and be aggressive, speed average was prob 55-60 at the best, traffic was the limiting factor. If I tried to go 80, or crazy agressive, MPG would be more like 28.

I have adjusted the cluster for 107%. I'd be stoked if the 15.5 gal tank gets me 400 miles and averages just over 30mpg. 80% of this tank will be my 7 mile commute where she hardly gets up to temp

I replaced my 2009 TDI JSW with a 2017 4 motion golf wagon.

by the time I adjust for the difference in fuel price, it really is a wash.

I used to get close to 40 mpg (on the low side) with the TDI.

the 1.8 liter gives me 37 mpg on a good day, moderate speed road trip.

On the other hand, my 11,000 pound Diesel V6 sprinter tiny house on wheels will reward right lane driving with 17 mpg, 18 plus if I baby it on a flat route, out of traffic and mountains.
