I have had my 01 Golf for about months. I have been chasing small problems here and there (Tires, timing belt/water pump, headliner, armrest) but ever since I got the car I have had problems with third gear.

The car has never wanted to go in 3rd. After reading dieselgeek's DIY and setting everything up correctly it still did not work. I began moving the linkage a thread or two on the in-out cable and finally got it to take 3rd and 4th gear. It still wasnt great but it worked. I then changed the fluid to Redline mt90, bought new cable ends, bushings, and the bearing that goes in the shift tower.

This week it has taken a turn for the worse. Shifting has gotten extremely rough and frankly the car is nearly impossible to drive. (previous owner said he had a clutch and single mass flywheel put in the car.)

I hate to throw parts at a car and hope to fix it but I do not know what to do on this one.

Shift Cables? Shifter inside the car?

Anyone have any ideas?
