Family is borrowing my '02 TDI and they went to start it, they said the dash lights up and the gauges move all over the place randomly, nothing happens when tried to start. Could this be a possible ground issue? I'm out of state and won't be able to look at it for a few days. I bought a new battery last year, they said that the negative terminal is corroded but they cleaned the terminal and still no change. I'm trying to sell the car (it's in the for sale section here). Which ground should I check, I believe there is one underneath the battery and one on the firewall by the ECM.

Do they know that they need to press the clutch to the floor to start the car or be in park if it's auto? I helped a lady the other day who wasn't pushing the clutch, in her own car, all the way to the floor to start.

My 03 has the same symptom. One bad clutch switch (assuming manual) that only misbehaved when really cold (hence the reason I have not replaced it yet)
