pulsing starter?

So my 2000 Jetta has been having a few issues starting in the mornings lately. Clutch in, key held solid to start and my dash lights blink and the starter starts and stops rapidly over and over. After driving 20 miles to work, the car starts just fine after being shut off. I will get the battery tested, but it seems odd to me that all the dash lights would blink on and off. Could this be an ignition switch or Clutch switch issue?

That's what a dying battery will do. Test and replace with a factory battery @~$108. It is a group 94R with 380A DIN and 80Ah ratings. The voltage is dropping too far under high load due to capacity loss (plate disintegration).

Jcrews,
I had the battery tested at Autozone today and they said it was bad. I'll call the dealer in the morning and see if they have one in stock. Thanks,
