Anybody keeping track of there Adblue Diesel exhaust fluid usage on the new 2015 Jetta TDI?

I have about 4900 miles on my car and see I have only used about 8% of the AdBlue tank so far (#674 below). Wondering if this is normal.

Address 01: Engine (04L 906 016 AJ)

104 Coolant temperature 71 °C
242 Engine speed 830 /min
627 Particle filter; field regeneration request status-Bit 0 0
629 Particle filter; kilometers since last regeneration 387690 m
630 Particle filter; oil ash volume 0.00 l
631 Particle filter; oil ash volume 1.5 g
632 Particle filter; soot mass calculated 19.81 g
633 Particle filter; soot mass measured 12.41 g
634 Particle filter; time since last regeneration 28440 s
635 Particle filter; unburned fuel calculated 0.000
636 Particulate filter ash load limit 80.00 g
674 Reducing agent fill level 91.70 %

Don't bother trying to track it with what the computer is "reporting." It doesn't actually know the exact level, as the AdBlue tank only has a 3 position level probe (empty, low, enough).

Given your figures, you should post 61,250 miles for a tank of Ad Blue. :) So one question would be: how many years will it take you to do that mileage? :)

Purely as another data point, AD BLUE consumption was 8 qts for 12,100 miles on a 2.1 L twin turbo MB GLK 250 BT.

Actually my VCDS says reducing agent distance remaining 12,303.5 Kilometers (7,645 Miles).

That's just a calculation based on fuel consumption and assuming the tank was filled to the top.

Most people say it's a function of how hard the car is pushed, like heavy acceleration. I would guess cruising at 70 mph would be pretty easy on consumption.

Another fluid to buy. Oh yay!
The better fuel economy of a DEF engine far and away justifies it...

These engines don't have to waste fuel burning off multiple catalysts like the older CRI TDIs...

Cheaper per gallon than diesel, and saves probably 10-15% on fuel consumption with higher power output.

Low load, idling uses the most DEF, NOx is produced at low loads, so high speed driving and and towing is when you use the least.

The system also doses as needed based on NOx input to the SCR and measured output of NOx... It's a great system and used only as needed while allowing the engine to run in a more efficient state of tune (less choked by retarded timing and EGR recirc)

Saying you are "saving money" by putting in an additive is like a Prius owner saying they are saving money by buying a fuel-efficient vehicle that costs $5-7K more than a comparable non-hybrid.

Bear with me as I make a few assumptions based on a brief search on the interwebs.
Miles traveled: 15,000
PPG for diesel: $2.75
MPG: 35
Gallons used: 428.6
Total cost: $1,178.57
Final PPG: $2.75

With Adblue:
Miles traveled: 15,000
PPG for diesel: $2.75
MPG: 35
Gallons used: 420 (2% less, which is max per advertising, so probably lower)
Diesel cost: $1,155
Adblue cost: $35 (5 gals @ $7 per)
Total cost: $1190
Final PPG: $2.83

Now, I could be off a little bit here and there, but I also posit that your fuel reduction will NOT be the 2% max that is advertised. So the numbers could shift a little in either direction. But typically, any time you are adding chemicals to fuel, it raises the price to operate (PPG). Don't believe the hype. Water is always a better choice vs. KoolAid!! ;)

Except DEF doesn't cost that much. I don't think I've paid more than $3 a gallon.

Your assumptions are incorrect, unfortunately.

That said, the increased complexity of having AdBlue and the probability of having to replace a system component that isn't under warranty will completely negate any theoretical fuel savings, so it's a moot point.

Nice reply, backed up with facts and links. I see what you did there.

$11.97 for 2.5 gallons - http://www.walmart.com/ip/BLUEDEF-Diesel-Exhaust-Fluid-2.5-gal/16933407 ($5.21 per gallon after tax)

$11.97 for 2.5 gallons - http://www.amazon.com/BlueDEF-DEF00...ie=UTF8&qid=1426953613&sr=8-1&keywords=adblue (No tax, so $4.78 with free shipping if you are a Prime member)

$48.40 for for 5 galons - http://www.amazon.com/Emissions-Blu...ie=UTF8&qid=1426953613&sr=8-4&keywords=adblue ($9.68 per gallon with Prime)

$43.48 for 5 gallons - http://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-729...ie=UTF8&qid=1426953613&sr=8-7&keywords=adblue ($8.70 per gallon with Prime)

Now please show me where you are buying it for $3 per gallon, except perhaps at 100 gallons per purchase.

Perhaps, if you have nothing to contribute to a thread, you'd be better off just skipping the post as opposed to posting nonsense. Or not. Your choice.
You're right. I'll move along. Good luck. ;)

Sorry to offend. I'm just passing on my experience as an owner of vehicles, plural, that use def. I buy def at truck stops and have bought as little as 3 gallons, though usually more. Where do you buy def for your 2013 Jetta?

Think outside the box (cube/tote/jug).

Even with the price difference, savings (or losses) are moot (as I said before) due to the increased system complexity, but I guess you missed that part.

Sold 2014 Jetta back to VW in 2016. In Oct 2020 Bought 2015 Passat TDI SE CPO
Our company 24' straight truck uses def. Tank holds 3 to 5 gal. Fill it up about every 1200 miles. Pay at the pump last time I looked was 2.79 per gal.
Never had to buy 100 gals of def. Truck only holds 50 gals of diesel.

I hope nobody is buying DEF for a 2013 Jetta. It doesn't use it.

Sorry, VeeDub, I was in a pissy mood last night and took it out on you. Not your fault.

And yes, I did catch your point about it being moot. As I said, plus or minus, based on some errors in my assumptions either way. If it reduces emissions, and cost very little more, why not? But as you alluded, it's yet another system that will eventually fail, and be very costly to repair/replace.

I have yet to need to add any DEF to my 2013 Jetta. This thing barely sips ANY!! ;)
