Any interest in having one of these?

No that the Ford Ranger is gone, there isn't a whole lot of choice in this market. I haven't followed this that closely but it would be great if this were an option in NA with a TDI of course

There are actually choices on the market. There's the RAM 1500 EcoDiesel, and soon to be GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado 2.8 Duramax. I would imagine that Ford will also come along with a diesel option for the new aluminum F-150 within a couple of years.

As for the Amarok, chances of getting one here are extremely slim due to the Chicken Tax, unless they can figure out a way around it or build the truck here in North America. Sure you're in Canada, but I think you're probably at the mercy of the US's regulations... I doubt very highly that VW will offer the Amarok in Canada unless they can also do it in the US.

I agree with you on the "not in Canada unless US decides to" thought. Too bad

I guess it all comes down to the market conditions and $$$$.

I thought I had read somewhere that they were going to build the Amarok in Tennessee for the US/Can market????

My understanding is that the TN plant is being equipped to make the new 3-row SUV alongside the Passat. I have never heard any reports of the Amarok or any other pickup truck being built in TN.

I don't agree with the "We're dependent on the US regulations."

Why?

The MKIV was still sold in Canada years after you guys lost it. It even got a face-lift.

Nissan is bringing back the Micra, leaving you guys in the dark.

Contrary to what Americans think, we can think on our own.

Meow! Post pics of that new Amarok in the driveway. ;)

All kidding aside, it'd be nice to see VW bring some small competition for the Micra! Maybe you're right and they'll bring the Amarok to show up the RAM 1500... we'll see. :)

You can, and in some instances have gotten models we do not. However things do largely agree. IMHO it's because manf's don't want to go through the trouble of federalizing a vehicle without being able to sell it in the USA since it's a bigger market.

Also, I'll note that the Canadian Mk4s wouldn't have required all that much additional certification - they were a continuation of models that already existed, and that continued to meet US crash safety standards through MY2010 (after that, they stopped, and there were a couple New Beetles that actually came off the line too late, and had to be bought back).

The main reason they weren't here was market positioning, I suspect.
